doctors, what are the risks of a ct scan on a teenager ?

Risk vs Benefit: The main risk is that a small amount of radiation is used during the procedure which can slightly increase the risk of developing cancer in the future.  The real question is why is the CT being ordered?  If the benefit of diagnosing a problem with CT is greater than the miniscule risk of developing cancer in the future, get the CT.  Remember there is also a risk of missing a disease without the CT

Depends: Depending on the reason or area of the body that the CT Scan is being done for; it may or may not need contrast. Check with your physician.

It depends...: Most people refer to the "stomach" and mean abdomen. Ct can show a broad array of normal and abnormal anatomy in the abdomen and pelvis. However, if you really meant "stomach" either an upper GI series or endoscopy is more sensitive for looking at the lining of the stomach where most of the issues arE.R.

Believe about what?: I'm glad your ct scan was negative, but am not sure what you mean by "could the doctor believe them?"  doctors would be likely to trust a radiologist's report of your scan findings; some may also want to review the scans themselves.  What where you hoping would come from your ct scan?

It depends: Most of the time the ct will be normal or may have some incidental findings not related to the original symptoms.

Yes: A negative ct can tell you what is not causing your headache (like a tumor, bleed, or sinus disease), but frequently doesn't tell you what is causing the headache. If your headache persists, i would recommend seeing a neurologist who treats headaches.

Benign tumor: Where is this angiomyolipoma?  A sub-centimeter benign tumor such as this is rarely a problem, but occasionally removed to confirm diagnosis or if it is in a part of your body that causes irritation.

Headache: There are a thousand different causes  of headaches. A ct scan will only rule out a few. What other tests and examination did your physician provide?

i recently had a ct scan w/ contrast of my abdomen which showed gastric wall thickening.  my doc now ordered upper endosc. w/ ct.  possible cause?

One possibility: Usually "thickening" of the stomach gets reported to make sure stomach cancer (rare) doesn't get missed...Unfortunately the stomach has a wide range of normal appearances including "thickened" (relatively more common) so we are left with getting an upper endoscopy...Just to be sure everything is ok. It's hard to be more precise without seeing the images. Make sure you follow up with your doctor.

No worries: No worries. In an individual adult patient, her chance of getting a particular cancer from a couple of CT scans is zero (mathematically rounded, of course). The slight increase in risk shows up in populations studies, meaning there may be one unlucky person out of thousands. For an individual, there is no difference from a couple of scans. If one doesn&#x27;t like her doctor, then change doctors.
