Good question: I researched your question: the half life of extended release Niacin in Advicor (lovastatin and niacin) is very variable, & depends on gender, dose, & individual characteristics. It peaks 5 hours after a single dose. Following years of treatment, it's probably safe to assume that it will take days (3-5) to wear off completely. Possibly longer depending on dose.

Med side effects: Advicor (lovastatin and niacin) contains a statin as well as niacin.  Side-effects include muscular aches (statins),  inflammation (both), lft elevation (both), and flushing (niacin).  Dangerous toxicity is rare, but muscle aches can occur in 10% patients.

A careful history and physical may reveal the source of delayed-onset sleep or early waking as stress- or habit-related rather than sleep apnea in adults. Pills don't teach skills; learning what stimulants a person takes, diagnosing  depression  &amp; teaching good sleep hygiene are important steps before prescribing potentially  harmful medications.

Some do help out..: Checking on someone's credential is not that hard and there are software/ways to know whether or not someone does have a medical license or not. As you probably know, pharmacists, psychologists, phlebotomists, physical therapists etc...Are also on this website. I guess it is hard to be 100% sure, thus when in doubt, check with your own doc.  Many docs do want to help out---i do. Good luck to you.

Anything: You can major in anything as long as you take the pre-medicine requirement.  It's advantageous to be a biology or chemistry major but not a requirement.
