Likely tension/work.: This is likely to be due to being overworked or to tension.  You might need a rest from your study, or a refreshing hobby that stimulates you.  Exercise and time outside can be a real help, and your body will get sunlight that is very important in processing of things like vitamin d, and cleansing of skin irritants and acne.  Take some time for yourself and you'd be surprised how you feel.

No: While reading in the dark may cause headaches and eye strain, there is no evidence that it damages eye sight.

Accepted Answer

Watery eye: When you read, your blink rate diminishes.  This can result in dry eye, which causes tearing and blurring of the vision.  This can be treated with artificial tears, such as theratears.  If the eyes itch, this may be an allergic response to dust in the book.   Try zaditor (ketotifen) or Pataday if the itching persists.

Dry Eyes : Yes, dry eye and  meibomian gland dysfunction (mgd) is most common cause for eyes looking red/bloodshot. Check it out...: There can be several causes for this.  Your eyes may need glasses full-time, not just for reading.  This is common.  They could also be dry and artificial tears may help.  Have your ophthalmologist check you out.

15 inches, or 40cm: In  general a patient needs to read at 40 cm or 15 inches
keeping your reading material closer than this distance means patient needs more power on the reading glasses. 
Reading at a distance closer than 15 inches might cause eye strains, headaches, blurry virion.

No: Eye sight in adults does not get worse with straining to read.  However, this may cause headaches and visual discomfort.  Get a good eye exam if you feel your vision is not what is should be.  Good luck!
