Consult your surgeon: Many surgeons have slightly different protocols as the technique and grafts vary.  In general, you will start with range of motion exercises and continue with strengthening and balance.  Core strength is very important to prevent a tear of the other acl.  There is no special diet that I am aware of, but good nutritional balanced diet is always a good advise.

Accepted Answer

Depends: Partial acl tears needs to be tailored to your individual situation depending on age, activity level, and instability. Plus, 1) a complete acl does not always need surgery, 2) a partial acl may be completely stable or may be completely unstable, 3) an acl reconstruction can be a relatively minor surgery when performed well. I recommend asking a sports medicine orthopedist that earns your trust.

Acl does not heal: Acl tears do not heal on their own. Suergry is usually recomended for young active people. However, not everyone with an acl tear needs surgery. They are those who are sedentary, don't have gross instability of the knee with activities of daily living, and those without other injuries to the knee such as meniscus tears. About 10% are copers and can return to sports such as skiing.

Prehab: The most important focus of the "pre-hab" stage prior to surgery is on your range of motion, quadriceps strength and hamstring flexibility. Your surgeon may suggest formalized physical therapy to assist in these exercise progressions.

Yes: Unfortunately, an acl cannot heal on its own. Once torn, the acl can scar back down, but cannot function like the original acl. Because of this, knees with persistent instability require acl reconstructions to restore function. Some patients can get by without acls if they limit all cutting and rotation activities through the knee. Others will have persistent impairment.

Patellar tendon: If you are 34 and active athletically i prefer autologous patellar tendon graft(using your own kneecap tendon). Older individuals w/ instability symptoms after an acl tear --- prefer allograft. Some surgeons will offer a hamstring ( quad. Looped) for your case. I still believe endoscopic acl reconstruction w/ your own patellar tendon gives the best results long term. Discuss w/ surgeon. Good luck!

ACL recovery: Acl recovery is a long process.  Depending on several factors, your recovery will probably require 6-9 months of activity modification.  Having said that, most people can return to normal walking and standing much sooner.

ACL: Dont do surgery until you are ready and feel like it is the right decision for you.  Ask your surgeon why he feels that acl surgery is the right choice for you.  Take a friend or family member with you to the doctor visit.  Ask questions.

Talk to Your Surgeon: After a surgery your postop rehab should be done under the care of your surgeon. This will happen in phases and you will progress at your own pace.

Depends: That depends on a number of items: the type of work you do, the method of acl reconstruction, and the graft choices. In some situations, it may take 4-6 months before returning to work. On the other hand, I have patients that are able to return to office work a couple days after an all-inside allograft acl reconstruction. Definitely ask your surgeon!
