Tricky: 58% of people in the us have the virus that makes cold sores.  Not everyone will have outbreaks.
Cold sore on the lip is contact transmitted.
The best way to avoid getting in the first place is not kiss or touch anyone or use towels, utensils or drink from cups who has it.
 Unfortunately, it can still be transmittable when an outbreak is not obvious.

Yes but relax: Most people your age already have this virus but do not know it. So you probably already have it. A blood test can tell. Most transmission occurs when virus is present in the absence of a sore. Most people who have it, and transmit it, have no symptoms. If you get a primary infection, the the sooner you are treated the better. Hours count. THe pills are very effective and safe.

Herpes Is Confusing: There is no answer to your question. There is no known way to predict if a cold sore is also shedding virus or not.  It can be both.

Never for sure: There is no way to tell for sure. Some people shed the virus all the time, even when they do not have a cold sore, while cold sores are most contagious when they are oozing fluid, the virus can be transmitted to others even during times when you have no blisters.

Virus: It could be a virus, but then again your wisdom tooth may be erupting and you're pinching your cheek between the tooth and your jaw. Must be seen in person to diagnose correctly. Please call your local dentist.

Cold sores are caused by a herpes simplex virus (hsv-1) closely related to the one that causes genital herpes (hsv-2). Both of these herpes simplex viruses can affect your mouth or your genitals, and can be spread via oral sex. The virus can be transmitted to others even during times when you have no blisters.

: With an active lesion, use Valrex 500mg twice daily.  Stress activates latent HPV, which in inactive state is attached to cell nuclei. Once in the blood stream, in the "active"state, antivirals are helpful in decreasing active ulcers.  Once infected, at the present there is no way of treating inactive HPV for inducing a "cure".

took valtrex (valacyclovir) for primary cold sore infection and no lesion appeared - is my saliva still very contagious? can i kiss my daughter's cheek

Cold sore: You can still be shedding the virus if you havent finished your regimen of therapy. I would finish my regimen and as long as there are no active lesions you should be ok.
