24 years old. eat junk food. 12 st 8. 5 ft 6. scared i have high cholesterol and clogged arteries. scared daily i will have a brain bleed or aortic aneurysm. have anxiety about health. more recent attacks. unsure if it is anxiety or medical emergency?

Some thoughts...: A person who has anxiety and has fear of brain or aortic aneurysms (without any normal reason to be fearing aneurysms) doesn't have an aneurysm problem, but instead has a phobia. The phobia (excessive, irrational fear) can be of one of many kinds, and in this case happens to be of aneurysms. The problem is a psychiatric one, and so are its exam and treatment. Primary care doctor can help evaluate.

Cholesterol: No,clogging of the arteries is multifactor dependent,cholesterol is just one of the risk factors.The others include heritability,smoking,diabetes,high BP.Other lesser factors are age,activity level obesity etc.Not having any positives in the risk factor s doesn't unfortunately completely guard against clogging.

do some people with high cholesterol live normal lives, or do they all die young from clogged arteries?

Normal: High cholesterol is only one risk factor.  Smoking, diabetes, hypertension, genetics, and age are other factors. Since there's nothing that can be done for the last two, excellent control of the first 4 is crucial. All cholesterol can be lowered, even if not normalized. I've seen many pts >80 yo with high cholesterol. Good life style with normal weight and healthy diet can mitigate hi cholesterol.

what are odds of 55 y/o woman with history of high cholesterol,never on statins,with perfect b/p,no smoking,little exercise to have clogged arteries?

There is probably: no 55 year old without at least a mild degree of atherosclerosis, but there is no way to predict the degree of severity based on very limited clinical info. See your doctor for a comprehensive evaluation and referral for any additional tests, if necessary.

You are too young: For clogged arteries, but not too young to have low t. Have a family doctor test you and if it is low, then get checked for sleep apnea as this can cause this in your age group.

hi i have high cholesterol and im only 17 and i am feeling pains in my heart will exercise remove this high cholesterol ? does the pain i feel mean i have a lot of plaque in my arteries? what can i do to remove the plaque if so :( im really scared

Need to examine: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without additional history, physical examination and may be some tests. You may have a genetic variation that can cause high cholesterol.  It would be prudent to see your doctor.

pain in arms when they are above my head, also night time arm pain. i have high cholesterol. could this be an artery issue?

Possibly: There are a lot of potential causes, and i would encourage you to be seen.  A detailed exam and appropriate studies can usually determine the cause.  One example of a potential cause is thoracic outlet syndrome, which is often aggravated by raising the arms above the head as you are describing.  Consider being seen.

i had a stress echo done in march that was normal. i have lately chest pain that starts as left arm pain then mid chest. could i still have a blocked artery that was missed? or is this all anxiety? i have high cholesterol and am overweight?

: Angina pectoris originates from the left chest (precordial area) then radiating the left arm or jaw, usually associated with shortness of breath (dyspnea) and sometimes diaphoresis. Your pain is atypical but angina pectoris cannot ruled out. Negative stress echocardiogram does not rule out coronary heart disease entirely. You should rediscuss with your cardiologist.

Hello: Hardening of the arteries (arteriosclerosis) refers to disease of the arteries leading to thickening of the artery wall and erosions of the inner lining of the arteries.  Arteries are hoses that carry blood (source of fuel and oxygen) from the heart to various organs (brain, kidney, arm leg, liver).  Disease leads to obstruction and reduced blood flow.

does butter or margarine causes you to have high cholesterol or clog your arteries?

Accepted Answer

Yes: if you eat too much of it. Sparing use is the rule of thumb for butter, oil and margarine.
