Fillings: First time or redone ones can be somewhat sensitive in the beginning. The bigger the filling and the deeper the filling, along with a low pain threshold tend to cause the most post-op discomfort. Your own dentist is the best one to ask as to what to expect and for how long.

Speak to Ur Dentist: Call your dentist and let him\her know you are still uncomfortable and ask if you need to be seen back in the office to have it evaluated or whether you should wait it out awhile longer. The big deciding factor here is whether or not it is slowly getting better or not.

Not if you are numb: If your tooth is numbed up with a local anesthetic, there is nothing to feel. Some small fillings do not require local anesthesia. Everyone has different pain thresholds. Often, "sweet air" alone is sufficient to negate the need for local anesthesia. Discuss this issue with your own dentist.

Not at all: With local anesthetics, dental treatment pain is the stuff of mythology and hysteria--if and only if you don't wait until dental disease is a full blown infection. In some advanced, abscess cases, anesthetic doesn't work 100%. In those cases, i'll prescribe antibiotics and home care remedies until infection subsides and then provide therapy. Much more confortable for both of us!

Filling sensitivity: Drilling out the decay on a tooth and restoring it with a filling is a surgical procedure on the tooth and it is not uncommon to have some post-op sensitivity. It could be related to the bite being high or the the nerve being inflamed. Call the dentist who treated you for advice on this matter. It might go away on its own or require further treatment. Your own dentist will know best.

why does my  filling hurt so bad when eating cold things?

Accepted Answer

Filling too tall: It is not unusual for new filling to be sensitive for few days.If sensitivity continues past 3-4 days, new filling may be too tall.  This makes the tooth very sensitive and requires adjustment to lower height of the filling. If pain is severe and new filling is deep/close to the nerve, the nerve may be damaged/dying possibly requiring a root canal. Teeth grinding can also make tooth sensitive.
