what type of reduction in efficacy is there in levaquin (levofloxacin) when taking with calcium supplement?  i did this for the first three days of a 10 day course.

% unknown: Calcium binds Levaquin (levofloxacin) thus not allowing it to be absorbed. (levaquin (levofloxacin) canadian prescribing information. Janssen-ortho inc. February 4, 2005.) if taken many hours apart, they're ok on the same day. O/w, would consider the first few days as ineffective and continue the course from day 4 as though it were day 1.

i have had bacterial prostatitis for 2.5 months now.  i've been on levaquin for 2 weeks and it seems to be helping. i'm finding thick clouds of calcium oxalate in my urine occasionally. i'm afraid this could contribute to my problem. what should i do?

Prostatitis: Cloudy urine from crystals (whether calcum oxalte or phosphate crystals, which is more common) is harmless and has nothing at all to do with prostatitis. Glad to hear your symptoms are improving.

if someone is taking levaquin they should avoid dairy but what if it's just lipton cream of chicken powdered soup that does have non fat milk sodium caseinate but the label says 0% calcium is that ok to take with the antibiotic?

: Without calcium in the foods, it should not be a problem. Furthermore, if you are afraid of poor med absorption due to divalent or trivalent in your foods,  you can take Levaquin 2 hours before or 2 hours after a meal.

oxalates can block and reduce nutrients absoption such as calcium,iron,zinc and magnesium.how many?can oxalates block and reduce my calcium absorption when i eat enough calcium?

: Any theoretical interference of oxalate on nutrient absorption is irrelevant for any one who is basically healthy and eating a reasonably balanced diet. Don't worry about tit.

Calcium: Should not be taken at the same time as levo.

Accepted Answer

Space it out: Calcium can bind to Ciprofloxacin and make it not able to be absorbed; what you can do is to take the ciprofloxacin, then two hours later, take the supplement or milk.  Space out exposure to make sure the medication is absorbed.

if someone in mid30s had growth plates that possibly never closed & took calcium mag, vit d, zinc, could they cause height to increase several inches?

Open growth rates: Open growth plates at age 30 or so are extremely unlikely.
Have you had these open plates confirmed or is that your thinking?
If confirmed your doctors need to take a bone biopsy and see what is going on. With open growth plates your risk of fracture is increased  and there is little likelihood, if any, of your growing taller.

Interesting: I am not aware of any of these supplements causing increased urination.  I suspect that your pregnancy has more to do with it. Are you having more salt intake?

Doctors and vitamins: I hope you understand that the various vitamin products on the market are something that most physicians would not have any expertise in. There are vitamin standards set by the government and daily recommended doses.  These are all well displayed on the vitamin products available. 

I tell my patients to choose the vitamin of their choice. If they are males the only other caution is that no iron!

i have calcium, magnesium, and zinc altogether in one pill. it says to take 1 to 3 caplets daily with a meal. can i take all three at once, instead?

Med Directions: if it says 1-3 daily, then it means all at once.  If it were to say take 1 tablet three times a day then it would mean exactly that.  If it said to take one tablet up to three times a day then it would be how your are interpreting the directions.  According to what you said the correct way is the first, 1-3 tablets all at once, one time a day.
