could lowering blood pressure help stop dementia?

Very complex answer: It would probably not stop dementia as dementia is influenced by many factors.  However, some research has suggested that both high and low blood pressure serve as risk factors for the development of dementia.  More important in my opinion is the fact that treatment of high blood pressue is associated with  reduced illness from many causes and is therefore very important.

Whoa!  Slow down.: Dementia is a complex issue.  One risk factor, particularly when well controlled, is not likely to result in dementia.  Rather than worrying about dementia, focus on taking good care of yourself and taking your medication.

What symptom: There is no medication that really improves dementia symptoms. Confusion, and anxiety and some other symptoms are treatable, keeping routines and reminders of the familiar are orienting ans can help.  Get a good medical evaluation to rule out any medical concerns and identify symptoms  of concern that might be treatable

my 83 year old husband has vascular dementia. his blood pressure is slightly high. he will be put on blood pressure medicine. im afraid his dementia will get worse. do ace inhibitors work better than blood pressure medicine for preventing dementi?

: The blood pressure needs to be controlled to prevent worsening of dementia. The ace inhibitors will not have effect on dementia other than by controlling high blood pressure and preventing its adverse  effects of on the nervous system. The adverse effects of high blood pressure are on the end vasculature hence control blood pressure.

my husband (83)was diagnosed with small vessel white matter changes, slightly greater than expected for his age.he is prediabetic and has borderline hi blood pressure.he is having some memory loss. should i be worried about dementia, ad, or stroke?

: That CT finding is quite common for an octogenarian. I am more surprised if he does not have some memory loss because most 83- years-old people do. Risk of dementia (senile type) or stroke is present but not that significant compared with his counterparts based on his relatively benign medical history. I do not worry about Alzheimer disease. Overall, he is still at reasonably good health.

low blood pressure of 90/60 with a pulse  of 90. has lewy body dementia and pulmonary emboli sim.   why would bp be low?

Not surprising: If you are taking meds for your lewy body issues, such as Dopamine agonists, these can cause orthostatic hypotension.  And you might wonder if your diagnosis is more likely multi-system atrophy or shy-drager syndrome.  Ask your docs if possible.

HBP and renal failur: High blood pressure itself can cause renal failure, but some meds used to treat hypertension can also have effects on the kidneys.  These include diuretics, ace inhibitors, and arb's.  The changes in renal function can be due to lowering the blood pressure or due to the meds themselves.

can blood pressure medicine cause your blood pressure to drop to low?

Possibly...: If the blood pressure medicine is at too high a dose or if the person is very sensitive to the medicine, then the blood pressure could drop too low and symptoms could result-like dizziness, passing out, etc. To avoid this, medication is started at a low dose and titrated up slowly. Taking your blood pressure at home is helpful during this process so that you can alert your doctor to low readings.

Many: Salty foods can elevate blood pressure as can some diet medications and things like mucinex (guaifenesin).

could it happen such that a corticosteroid drug causes your blood pressure to rise drastically?

Accepted Answer

Yes it can: While on prednisone, it sometimes helps to restrict your sodium consumption which can sometimes help prevent the increase in blood pressure/.
