Affected area : Mild chickenpox may present as fluid-filled vesicles scattered anywhere on the skin and rarely affects the mouth‘s mucous membranes. Severe chickenpox is painful to see.
Hand foot and mouth disease also causes vesicles which may be few in number but appear on the palms and soles of the feet and the mucous membranes of the mouth.

Can be helpful.: Varicella is a self-limiting disease but can have a higher risk of serious complications in adults, especially if one has any chronic medical conditions, taking chronic steroids,  have HIV or other immunedeficiency disorders, or receiving chemotherapy for any cancer.  Acyclovir or other antiviral medications is the treatment of choice if needed.

Recognizing pattern: Someone who is well trained can distinguish these by history and exam. Since neither requires treatment, the management of potential secondary problems is where training also provides proper direction.A lay person and some physicians would not be expected to recognize HSP nor could the differences be explained within the limits of this platform.

my daughter is 11 and had her mmr immunizations.  she was diagnosed with chickenpox on 11 august 2016, german measles on 19 september 2017 and now 11 september 2018 she has a rash again, not yet diagnosed. can it be a children's disease again?

Possibly: Studies show that MMR in a single dose is effective in protecting 80% with a second dose, usually given here at 4-5 bring that protection up to 95%. MMR does not protect against chickenpox, although a vaccine is available. Rashes are common to many viral illnesses, not just the ones in the vaccine. If there are many unimmunized kids in the region the chances of getting such CHD increases.

Different viruses: They are different diseases caused by different viruses.  Chicken pox is caused by the varicella zoster virus, which also causes shingles in adults. The rash is also different, being vesicles with fluid and very itchy . Hand foot mouth is caused most commonly  by the coxsackie a virus. It also causes mouth sores and rash, but it is seldomly itchy and it is seen more in palms and soles.

Chicken pox is diagnosed on the rash appearance, but if vaccinated, this can vary. Blood tests can prove immunity for school.
