Compounding insults: We are programmed to live to 120.  The reason we don't is because of the toxic abuse we put our bodies through.  Consider the long term effect of the chemicals in your dad's addiction compounded over the years.  His roi (return on ingestion) may be a penalty for early withdrawal from his life account.  I see that you care very much for him.  I hope he knows how much his habit will hurt you both.

Probably: Some data has suggested a link between diet soda consumption and metabolic syndrome, a constellation of findings associated with increased cardiovascular risk (i.e. Heart attacks and strokes).  Excessive amounts of many things often have negative consequences and as a general rule i recommend using moderation as a guiding principle.

No: Regularly drinking soda has been linked to Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, Diabetes, heart disease &amp; metabolic syndrome.  Other possible risks include: increased weight, decreased bone mineral density (BMD)  obesity, erosion of tooth enamel, mineral depletion &amp; dehydration. If it contains artificial sweeteners &amp; is used daily, this is linked to a 3 fold ^ in  dementia &amp; stroke.

No: Diet coke is not food. The balance of acids in it will tend to rob your bones of calcium and weaken them. The artificial sugar nutrasweet breaks down into methanol and formaldehyde, both of which are toxic.

Portion control and increased activity are the best ways to keep weight gain at bay.
