Urine test for sugar: These were used to test the urine for glucose before home blood sugar testing became widely available.  Tests for urine glucose are less helpful because they don't show anything unless blood sugar is over 180, and because they show what the blood sugar has been since the last time someone urinated, instead of what the sugar is right now.

I shudder to think how you're being treated by the dinosaur who has you using Diastix! What do your A1c's run? What drugs are you on for diabetes? Please go get a 2nd opinion for diabetes management.

Accurate for urine: Diastix are fairly accurate for telling how much glucose is in the urine; however, this is not always a good indicator of the current level of glucose in the blood, as the urine excreted may have been produced many hours before.

Blood glucose tests: Diastix measure glucose in urine.  This is a very inaccurate picture of what is going on in the blood stream, as the urine being tested may have been produced hours ago.  Self blood glucose monitoring, using a small blood specimen, is much more accurate.  It is the standard followed by most diabetic patients.

NO: Diabetes is diagnosed when fasting blood sugar is over 125.  Diastix detect sugar in the urine which occurs only when the blood sugar is over 180, so it would miss a lot of cases.  Also, if someone has eaten a lot of sweets or other carbs, their blood sugar might go over 180 for a brief time, but return to normal quickly, so they aren't diabetic, but diastix would show sugar in the urine.
