i been getting sleepy and falling asleep after eating but i dont have any other symptoms should i get tested for diabetes if i dont have all the symptoms i have one of the symptoms which is being sleepy after i eat?

: Hard to say: if you have a family history of diabetes, a history of gestational (pregnancy related) diabetes, or if you are significantly overweight or do not get regular exercise, it would be worth checking into it yes.

hi i have a habit of eating chocolate often and also for pleasure when had a long day. i noticed that after eating chocolate at times that i get really sleepy and tired feeling. i also sleep about 5-6 hours a night. should i get check for diabetes?

Accepted Answer

: Since chocolate also contains serotonin it can make you relaxed or sleepy. It also contains a small amount of caffeine which apparently doesn't stimulate you. I don't think you get enough sleep which is another cause of sleepiness or fatigue before bedtime. There is no harm in getting checked for diabetes.

21 weeks pregnant ?': At 21 weeks of pregnancy, tiredness, low energy is a normal phenomenon.  "Sleepiness " after a meal is normal whether pregnant or not.

The : The classic signs of diabetes are polydypsia, polyphagia, and polyuria. This is increased thirst, increased hunger, and increased urination, respectively. Reactive hypoglycemi: When some people eat carbohydrates, especially concentrated sweets, they develop reactive hypoglycemia as their body releases insulin which is physiologically normal to regulate their blood sugar. However instead of reaching a normal blood sugar, the insulin causes it to drop below normal. This hypoglycemia may cause lightheadedness, shakes, fatigue or weakness. Avoiding sweets helps.

Depends on the food: If you eat lots of carbohydrates, or "white foods" which affect the Insulin system, you may have postprandial hypoglycemia.  Turkey with high levels of seratonin is often a thansgiving culprit.  Your situation is common, and not an area of concern, but review your food experiences, as you will find some provocateurs and some non-sleep inducers.

Sweet dreams: Eating a lot of sugars, or any simple carbohydrate, transiently raises you bloods ph, which causes mild sedation. Eating large meals shunts blood to the stomach which can make you feel tired as well.

Lack of sleep?: Some sleepiness after a large meal is common, and probably related to hormonal and brain mechanisms where fullness and sleep cycles are regulated. Excessive/increased sleepiness at any time may suggest a problem with not enough or poor quality sleep. Other medical conditions like low thyroid can also contribute.  Talk with your dr about your sleep and general health screening.
