A behavioral method: Desenitization actually is used in a variety of settings.  In mental health, it refers to the graded exposure to a feared activity or object, e.g., snakes or spiders.  Usually, relaxation techniques are part of the process.  Then, starting perhaps with just visualizing the feared object, the person gradually increases exposure until it becomes "routine."  well studied and can be highly effective.

Violence: Prolonged exposure to violence does desensitize us and therefore needs self monitoring. This is one reason we need to monitor how much television our children are viewing. Exposure to real violence has bee shown to have negative effects.

Please clarify.: From what i know of desensitization, it is a form of therapy for allergies that is supposed to make people less sensitive to things they are allergic to, like chocolate.  They are exposed to a small amount, which gives a reaction, which, over time, gets less.  It has been done for a long time with decent results, but is not employed as much as it once was.

Yes can be done: Allergic reaction ( to any thing ) is complex process , several factors &  different mechanisms are involved . Allergy - like penicillin which will give anaphylatic shock (and death ) is caused by type-i  mast cell /  ige reaction , is being done for certain drugs , by specialized centers ( or offices ), and is not a routine procedure.

Depends: Which tissues are you desensitizing?  Teeth can be desensitized when sensitive, usually the result of trauma.  No side effects when desensitizing teeth.

Immunotherapy: Immunotherapy involves giving an allergic person, small doses of what they are allergic to.  The dose is slowly increased so that the individual becomes desensitized.  
Desensitization can be done by subcutaneous injections or by a newly developed program of sublingual drops.

Need more info: Would this be in the context of opiate or other drug withdrawal? If so i think it's a matter of time and regular exercise along with a healthy diet. But without knowing the reason for the desensitization it's hard to know how to advise you.

90%: I tell my patients 30% have dramatic improvement, 30% good results & 30% fair results. 10% don't improve. Better results occur when the patient is younger and doesn't have asthma and when fewer allergies are present. Success depends also on the commitment of the patient and the family and the expertise of the allergy office and staff.
