Varies: Depo is notorious for causing abnormal bleeding, sometimes that bleeding can be controlled within a few days with the pill.  However, sometimes it takes weeks or months.

Irregular bleeding: with Depo Provera (medroxyprogesterone) is a known common side effect.  If it becomes severe and constant it should be evaluated.  If sounds like the small amount of bleeding you are having is nothing to worry about.

Vaginal infection: You may have a possible bacterial vaginal infection which your need to tell your MD about by making an appointment for assessment and treatment. A foul vaginal odor is either an infection or a retained foreign body like a tampon.

More info is needed: The reason for the excess bleeding needs to be established and appropriate treatment needs to be started.  Specific questions would be for a mild bleeding disorder, as von willebrand disease, or mild coagulation factor deficiency.  Regardless of the cause, iron replacement therapy needs to be considered.  Please see your physician.  Is there a family history of bleeding disorder?

Very Common: Depo-provera is very effective but notorious for causing abnormal bleeding.  Up to 80% irregular bleeding with the first shot.  However, it also causes light or absent bleeding (amenorrhea) with subsequent doses. Up to 50% stop menses after their second shot. So if it's your first dose, hang in there.  Transient hair loss, weight gain, and depression are also common symptoms you should look for.
