: This is more of a cosmetic issue rather than a health problem. The goal is to remove excess oil and debris by a warm wash cloth followed by application of something like witch hazel which is a good astringent. A dermatologist could advise you further.

Maybe so...: Sometimes it is a mixture of dead skin cells, sometimes it is sebum (creamy oil from the sebaceous glands in the skin), and sometimes it is both things. Vigorously trying to get the stuff out can lead to "inflammation" of the skin glands and skin pores, which then leads to rashes and pimples.

You can make them LOOK smaller with a matt-type foundation makeup sold by many of the big cosmetic companies -- usually named "pore minimizer", or something similar.

Great make up: Large, unsightly skin pores on the nose or cheeks are difficult to reduce in size. They can be shrunk temporarily with a face peel, and sometimes with laser treatments. Pore size on face: Pore size is genetically determined. There aren't very good methods for minimizing them. Retinoid creams like retin a, (tretinoin) tazorac help refine them. They will help decrease the oiliness of the face. They have to be started slowly twice a week at nighttime & gradually increased to every night. Also they are not allowed during pregnancy & they do make your skin more sun sensitive. Use sunscreen daily.
