Most likely, but: Teeth don't "fall out" unless they are deciduous ("baby") teeth. If your tooth is "coming out in pieces", it is heavily decayed. Only your dentist can tell for sure. If the tooth needs to be restored to full function, the nerve will need to be evaluated and treated appropriately. If the tooth does not need to be restored, but simply removed, it makes little to no difference if the nerve is dead.

Should not be: There should be no discomfort whatsoever during the root canal procedure if you are properly anesthetized. There is always the chance of some post operative pain but in a tooth with intact blood supply this is usually brief and can be effecticvely managed with a combination of otc and prescription medication.

Complicated question: The sensory part of a nerve only controls sensation - it feels numb. The motor part (moving muscles) should be intact, so you have functionality (for now). A dead nerve ultimately leads to problems - you don't sense trauma or pressure, so you can repeatedly injure a body part w/o knowing it &amp; the sore can get infected. You need aRoot Canal: When the pulp of a tooth becomes damaged & the nerve is exposed, you need a root canal to save the tooth. That's when a dentist cleans out the pulp and nerve from inside the tooth and seals it back.  Without that, the tooth will continue hurt & be sensitive to hot or cold.  Even worse, if it is not treated, it can fill with bacteria from your mouth & form an abscess.  Go see your dentist.

Basically yes : The nerve ina tooth can be dead  but not acutely infected and paainful.  Even if there is no pain and swelling,  these teeth still need to have root canal.

RCT: If your tooth has a dead nerve, but rct was not completed, you have to see your dentist to have that work completed.  Otherwise the problem is not solved, and the tooth will at some point cause pain and\or swelling. If you still have pain or discomfort, you will have to check back with your own dentist to determine the cause and the appropriate treatment necessary.
