Absolutely: I'm assuming this is subacute granulomatous thyroiditis. Dequervain's thyroiditis is quite common in young fokls and generally gets missed. One of my teammates got it in residency; we biopsied it for interest; it was a good time. It's annoying but seldom dangerous; if you become briefly hyperthyroid or hypothyroid, your physician can handle it. Aspirin may help with the discomfort.

Yes: De Quervain's tenosynovitis very common.  It can develop spontaneously or after trauma.  I see it commonly in women who recently had children.  It develops from a combination of tissue swelling from hormones and from how new mothers lift their babies.  Symptoms often resolve spontaneously.  Those cases that don't usually respond to a single steroid injection, which is safe while breast feeding.

Tenosynovaginitis: Yes, that word.  It's a problem of the tendon, it's lining, and the sheath of one of the thumb tendons.  They get irritated and enflamed.  It's quite painful.  They become thick and hard so the tendon can't slide normally.  This just makes things worse.  Early on, the first month or two, a cortisone shot and a brace can be effective treatment.  Later, it requires surgery.

DeQuervains: This is a thickening of the tendons on the palm side of the hand. These are the gripping tendons( flexor tendons) and is treatable with steroid  and novocaine injections, or if needed surgery. Application of a solution of DMSO with a steroide is sometimes very helpful.

Injection then surg: Cortisone shot and wrist brace that holds the thumb can be an excellent treatment.  If that doesn't work, then do the small surgery.

It hurts: Mainly, it hurts.  If it gets bad enough, it can lock up the tendon.  I recently had a patient who had it so bad that the tendon had locked in  way that cocked her wrist to the side.  Surgery fixed it and she was soooo happy!

NO you won't die!: But you will suffer with pain if you wait.  This is a condition easily treated and you will be grateful for it!  get a cortisone shot if you haven't had it already.  Surgery if shot doesn't work!
