im getting over covid, at first during covid i couldnt really poop it was hard to , now that im getting over it , i can poop but for the passsed 2 days its been watery diahhrea thats very dark brown/blackish in color , not tarry or sticky though?

: Constipation is not as common as diarrhea with Covid-19 infection. Your symptom seems opposite with other patients. There is nothing to concern even if the dark/blackish color may imply occult blood in your stool which may happen in Covid-19 infection. Only concern do you have significant abdominal pain. Otherwise, eat light diet for a day or two, your normal bowel habit will return.

i had a colonoscopy monday and went poop for the first time today since the colonoscopy it was soft sticky and the water was dark red. i'm concerned?

You should be !: You haven't told us the reason for your exam, what was found, what was accomplished during the procedure, nor whether you're taking drugs that can precipatate bleeding, SO please call your colonoscopist right away!

&gt; than if dad didn't: While Family History of someone w/Crohn's disease is linked to greater risk in others in family, more often than not, it's a sporadic case, meaning there's no genetic link. what does a darker sticky poop mean for newborn? i forgot what the gi doctor told me today. something about more acid in stomach. is that right?

Accepted Answer

Depends: First stool is dark sticky and green and called meconium stool.  Over time it turns yellow and goes from very loose to well-formed.  These changes are allc normal.  When you start feeding her so-called solid foods, though they are Not very solid, the color, texture, frequency of the stools will change.

Don't think so: Liquid Zantac (ranitidine) is sometimes given to babies to help treat stomach reflux. If a baby is having worsened symptoms or new types of symptoms, parents can call the doctor for advice. If there is just one odd-looking poop, but the next few poops look fine, and if the baby is happily eating and comfortably sleeping... it may not be anything serious. The doctor can help figure things out.

Diet/malabsorb? : May be diet related or...
Sticky stool, especially if foul smelling, bulky, pale, even oily can be seen with a bunch of disorders that interfere with fat absorption.  Can range from parasites to celiac sprue to inflammatory bowel to other gut issues or  pancreatic disorders.
Should get checked by doc, history, family history, physical exam, labs, stool studies, and perhaps other evaluation.

Few suggestions...: Constipation - hard or infrequent stools - is usually the result of slow transit or ibs (irritable bowel syndrome).  Consuming more insoluble fiber (eg. Wheat bran, lentils, some vegetables), water (64+ ounces per day) and active lifestyle can speed up transit through the bowel and relieve your symptoms.  Good luck!

GIT bleed: These are very serious symptoms as they may indicate a gastrointestinal bleed with hypovolemic shock. The blood loss from this if uncontrolled can be life threatening. Please go to an emergency room urgently for assessment and management. Do not delay

Maybe melena?: Melena, by definition, is passage of dark stools stained with denatured blood.  As we established in prior healthtap answers, all dark stool is not melena. Your doctor, or even an over-the-counter test that you can purchase, can check to see if your dark stool contains blood.  Needed is for you to provide a sample of the dark stool. False positive results can occur based on diet & stool additives.

No: If you have no other symptoms, the character and frequency of bowel movements has not changed and the stools are not jet black or contain obvious blood or mucous this should not be an issue.  When you have passed age 50 you may want to see a GI doctor for routine colonoscopy.
