Normal: What you described is withing the normal spectrum of bleeding in menstrual period. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low fat milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex. 
Get HPV vaccine.

Brown = Blood: A normal period lasts seven days or less. If you're having old brown blood before and after your period, then it's probably lasting more than seven days? I generally recommend seeing a doctor for an examination and possibly an ultrasound to check on this type of problem.

Normal: The brown discharge is just broken down blood cells. At the end of your period, as the bleeding slows down blood stays in the vagina and starts to break down causing the brown discharge. If there is no burning, pain or itching then do not worry this is normal.

A urine pregnancy test gives a reliable result if done correctly. One can test about 3 weeks after sex (3 weeks after when conception might have occurred), or 1 week after missing a period. An Ob-Gyn doctor can evaluate any persistent or worrisome symptoms.

Brown discharge between periods could signify one of number of problems, including vaginal infection, endometriosis in uterine or vaginal wall, a spontaneously aborted fertilized egg (yes, one can have a period even though egg fertilization may have occurred, though usually it is not a typical one).  See your gp or gynecologist.

There are many options available to help regulate the menstrual cycle. Schedule a visit.

Breakthrough: This sounds like breakthrough bleeding, and i'm sorry you're going through this. Breakthrough bleeding can be common and this brown discharge is just old blood.  Nothing to worry about, nothing with your body is necessarily wrong. If bothers you, can consider taking birth control pills to help regulate cycle. But otherwise, this is likely not to occur regularly. If it does, see a gynecolgoist.

Get tested for STD: If you had unprotected sex, this brown discharge could be a sign of a sexually transmitted disease.  You need to have a pelvic exam with swabs to test you for this.  Treatment would be with antibiotics which are necessary to avoid the long term complications of an untreated std.  It can cause infertility, so get tested.
