Old blood: Fresh blood is usually red and the fresher it is the brighter red it is.  As blood begins to break down (a soon as a few hours) the blood begins to darken. Brown and eventually to thick, sticky, and black.

If not on the pill it may be the answer, go see your doc, at your age it could be an infection of the cervix but you likely aren't ovulating regularly thus not having the hormonal changes needed for a monthly cycle; consider a pregnancy test as well if applicible but go see your doc.

A great way to maximize your chances in a situation like this (e.g. irregular withdrawal bleeding) is to utilize an OTC (over the counter) ovulation kit to determine when you're most fertile. The color of blood is not usually indicative of any particular issue
