Dandruff: Dandruff, or seborrheic dermatitis,  is a common disorder that is believed to be caused by a yeast.  Most treatments are geared at reducing the  yeast.  Such treatments include nizoral, (ketoconazole) head and shoulders,  and selsun blue. Tar shampoos and corticosteroids can be used as well. This condition rarely results in hair loss.

hi i have dry scabs on my scalp, what could this be and best way to treat it. i know it's not dandruff. it gets itchy and i pick them which then bleed?

Reaction: Did you apply anything on your hair? Such as chemical products or hair dye? You may be reacting to them. Also if you have eczema, it can affect your scalp. Talk to you doctor or seek the opinion of a dermatologist.

hi , i've had dandruff problems since i was 12 ,and i am 21 now i tend to be in my scalp everyday. i get dry patches as well /scabs but i still scratch! and as i'm scratching it feels as if i'm scratching my tissue or brain until it bleeds?

Try hydrocortisone: This sounds like you have what is called "seborrheic dermatitis".  What a big word for something so common!  it is in the eczema family.  Shampoo with t-gel.  Try over the counter Hydrocortisone cream, rub in for 30 seconds 2 times each day whenever the rash is present.  There is no cure for this, it will almost always come back.  Don't get discouraged, just keep the Hydrocortisone handy.

See dermatologist: Your scabs are a result of infection and your dandruff is due to a fungus.You should see a dermatologist to give you the proper treatment.

Just a: thought but you should consider seeing a Dermatologist...what you have sounds like it may be more "serious" than Dandruff..eg PSORIASIS,,,suggest you try an anti-Psoriasis  SHAMPOO ..ask your Pharmacist for recommendation....

See a dermatologist: You need a professional diagnosis and probably a prescription. You fail to name anything you tried so far and you fail to indicate how anything was used or how often. Meanwhile you can try T-SAL or ketoconazole or selenium or zinc pyrethrum every day in the shower. Sprinkle some water on it, then rub in a drop of shampoo several hours before the shower.

i have anxious habit to play in hair . dry scalp , trying to quit. picked dandruff , scab  . picked at scab & feels moist , what's that moistness?

Manage it: You won't be able to stop, so don't be hard on yourself. Some folks are wired to do this kind of thing with scalp lesions. What you can do is manage any dandruff / seborrheic dermatitis aggressively; perhaps ketoconazole would be right for you in addition to a good dandruff shampoo, and you can ask your physician about coal tar, sulfur, selenium, and/or a bit of a glucocorticoid.

my scalp has been very itchy and has dry patches that scab up. i've tried all the dandruff shampoos that are out there. it also hurts/stings?

Scalp infection: You may have a scalp infection or another issue like inflammation. I recommend that you get it looked at to determine the best treatment.
