Not typical: Dairy allergy is most common in children. It is unusual for an adult to "suddenly" become allergic to dairy. Evaluation for food allergy should include a thorough history and physical and if appropriate skin test and / or blood testing.

Substitute?: Rice drinks, soy drinks, almond drinks.  Goat cheese may be ok but has about 75% cross-sensitivity to dairy.

Many: The most common symptoms of a dairy or milk allergy or GI symptoms and skin symptoms.  Gi symptoms would be nausea, vomiting and diarrhea (with tiny amounts). Skin symptoms would be hives, itching, swelling, or flare of eczema. In infants, bloody stools can be seen.  In infants, a rare lung reaction to milk is called heiner's syndrome.  A severe milk reaction is anaphylaxis.

Varies: Milk allergy can present with a variety of symptoms including: rash, hives, itchiness, lip/tongue/throat swelling, trouble breathing, belly pain, vomiting and rarely death.

Possible: The child may not have a true allergy in the first place. Initially, the child may have had milk protein intolerance, which is not an allergy.

YMMV: It depends on your degree of sensitivity.  If you have had anaphylaxis to milk products, then avoid even small amounts.  Otherwise you might get by with a bit.

Anywhere : Part of a typical allergic reaction to foods is redness and itching of skin. It can occur anywhere and is often generalized and progresses to hives. It is unusual for the reaction to occur more than 2 hr. After eating the food and it is unusual to have only skin symptoms without mouth (itching, swelling) and GI (nausea, vomiting, cramps, diarrhea) symptoms. Reactions occur after 1 sip, each time.

Accepted Answer

No: Lactose intolerance is a inherited metabolic problem in that the intestine lacks the enzyme to break down the lactose in milk.
Milk allergy is also partly genetically predisposed but is not linked to lactose intolerance.  There is a remote possibility that if the intestine gets inflamed enough by continuing exposure to a food allergen, the inflammation may lead to a transient lactose intolerance.
