Depends: Small dirty cuts are openings in the skin that can allow the tetanus spores to grow in your tissue.It doesn't take many to start the process ; lead to tetanus. If you've had a booster within 5 yrs, just clean the cut ; watch for problems. If no booster, or you never completed the primary series, you should get one.Today they have the tdap which actually boosts you for tetanus, diphtheria ; pertussis.

Not always: The wound does not always have to be deep to get tetanus. Causes include wounds which are contaminated with dirt, poop (feces), or spit (saliva)
puncture wounds such as from a nail or needle and burns. Tetanus has sometimes been seen with clean superficial wounds when only the upper most layer of skin is scraped off. I wish you well with your health!

Tetanus: While any open wound can be a source of tetanus, it is more common in wounds contaminated by dirt, feces, soil or saliva.  It is also more like to occur as a result of puncture wounds, crush or avulsion injuries, burns, or necrotic/devitalized tissue.  It is always wise to be current on vaccinations and if a person is behind who has an open wound, call your physician to get them updated.

Any skin opening: An untreated foot laceration that clogged thru the swamp, mud ; dirt would be the prime illustration of tetanus risk. Yet, a simple shallow opening in the skin, contaminated by tetanus spores ( that are all around us but predominantly outside in dirt) could give you tetanus. You put yourself at risk every time you let your system weaken ; the booster is simple ; readily available.

No: That booster should protect you for 10 yrs.Some folks that work in landscape gardening as pros or a hobby get boosters at 5yrs since they have a heavy exposure, but that is their cautious option, not a firm recommendation.

Booster : when was your last tetanus shot ? Was it within the last 5 years. Was the knife clean ? Would get a booster shot in consult with your primary care doc. If you have a shot in last 5 years you should be ok. Probability of tetanus with a kitchen knife is almost zero.

Your tetanus: Is good. Did you clean the  wound with soap and water really well? That is important. If not do it now. Otherwise you will be fine
