when would ct scan cancer effects show up? if i received too much radiation as a result of ct scans, when would the cancer potentially show up? could i get canncer in 10-20 years because of ct scan radiation?

First, : First, there is no cutoff radiation dose which is "too much" above which will result in cancer.  The risk of cancer simply starts out low and increases the more radiation you receive. Development of cancer is like rolling dice (do you have good luck or bad luck?) - the more radiation you're exposed to, the more chances you're taking at rolling the dice. Cancer induced by radiation does take many years to develop; the following are some examples:

- the average latent period before cancer develops is about 25 years for cancers of the brain, colon, skin, and lung. 
- the average latent period for breast cancer is 22 years and for cancer of the salivary glands/thyroid glands is 20 years. 
- the average latent period for bone cancer is 10 to 15 years and for leukemia is 7 to 10 years.

However, the time periods described above are averages and cancers can develop more than 50 years after radiation exposure.

Imaging test.: A pet/ct is a combined whole body x-ray (ct scan) and a functional image based on how much sugar is taken up in various parts of the body.  It is not a way of diagnosing lung cancer, which requires a biopsy, but it can help deciding if a biopsy is needed.  A lung nodule on x-ray may be benign or cancerous.  If that nodule takes up a lot of sugar on pet, it is more likely to be cancer.

PET - CT: Pet-ct scans are a means of combining the x-ray of a ct scan with the functional study of a pet scan. The pet scan can see over-active cells that are actively using glucose. The over-active cells may represent cancer cells and is a means of telling if cancer cells are spreading or growing somewhere in the body. The ct scan may see a growth & the pet scan can see if the growth has overactive cells.

The significance: depends on your risk profile(e.g. smoker vs nonsmoker),  clinical scenario, and certain CT characteristics of the nodule.  It is possible nothing needs to be done if you are low risk. Inflammation: Unfortunately, all we can tell from your labs/hx is that there is an ongoing inflammatory process. The three big categories are infection, autoimmune, and malignancy, although in your age group an autoimmune cause would be far more common than cancer. As you continue your workup with your doctor you may consider a rheumatology consult.

Be evaluated : Decreased stool caliber and abdominal pain are two symptoms that are worrisome for colon cancer.  There are other benign causes of these symptoms as well.  Screening colonoscopy commonly starts at age 50, so there are several reasons to see your doctor and find out what is causing the symptoms.  Ct scans can be negative in colon cancer, so talk to your doctor about colonoscopy.

just had my 3rd low dose ct lung cancer scan. one in 2015, 2019 and now 2019. on all three they have noted a solitary 3mm non-calcified nodule within the medial subpleural aspect of the lingula, no pulmonary mass, nodule is stable and unchanged?

Lung nodule: Features of lesions that are likely non-cancerous : size&lt;3cm, smooth, round, calcified, age&lt;50, non-smoker etc. But it does need to be monitored for any changes. Feel free to discuss it personally with a physician and share the complete report of CT. Good luck

Pain LLQ: You shouldn't jump to cancer conclusions. The symptom/finding can be many things. It is possibly small kidney stones not causing several pain or other possibilities. Without the workup one can't know and sounds like you're being followed appropriately.

Sometimes: I'm not sure what a "ct tap" is.  I assume it's a typo for "ct scan".   Ct scans can show some types of cancer, but the ability to find cancer depends on the type of cancer and specifics about the type of ct scan (such as whether it uses contrast).

not always: Not all cancer is visible with a ct scan. There are many variables- size of tumor, location, presence or abscence of IV or oral contrast.
