Depends on: The nature and the cause of the chronic pain.  For instance, if your chronic pain is from a bulging disk and you have that repaired, odds are pretty good that your chronic pain is "cured" or significantly relieved.  There r advances being made all the time in the treatment of chronic pain to help the pain w/o just knocking people out with narcotics. Try to fix the problem not just treat symptoms.

emotional and psychiatric support
over the counter meds like tylenol

Chronic Conundrum: Chronic pain itself is unique to every individual and so no specific "test" can verify its absence or presence.  What is measureable and worthy of testing are the conditions that might precipitate chronic pain.  Findings on x-ray, ct, mri, blood work and by clinical examination are sufficient to make a pathological diagnosis, but whether these findings result in chronic pain depends on the person.

Long term pain: Long term pain is pain that  persists. It is present for a variety reasons initially but persists because it does not go away. There are a variety of chronic pain syndromes: some are  localized; some are  back pain; some are fibromyalgia which is more widespread. The duration can be a clue - chronic can be more than 3 to 6 to 12 months. The location can be neuropathic, visceral,  somatic, deep, etc.

Get checked: Pain is a way for your body to communicate something is wrong, hurt, broken, not functioning well.  Ignoring it solved nothing.  Have your doctor evaluate the cause of your pain and try the suggested treatments.  If it is not life threatening, you can add alternative therapies of acupuncture, massage, physical therapy, etc.

Treat: Just be careful not to use medications that would worsen the situation lile frequent dosing of short acting opioids.  Antidepressants with nor-epinephrine effect, anti-epileptic drigs and some other agents are most helpful.
