Crackles: As the next step, I'd consider trying to locate the area of the body you think it is originating in. For example, if it sounds like the crackling is in your ear, then it could be an ear wax issue, or maybe you have retained water in your ear from a shower/bath. Higher pitched crackles come from the ear - lower pitched crackles radiate from elsewhere in the body. Hope this helps

It's likely: Is the cough productive?  If you are bringing up phlegm (sputum), it is likely to be infection, the chances of which are greatly increased by smoking.  If the sputum is yellow or green, or foul smelling, it may be a bacterial infection, although without fever that is less likely.  Cut down or stop smoking, at least until it clears, and consider permanent cessation. Your lungs are sending u message.

Monitor: The sound may be transmitted from the upper airway if he is congested, but expiratory sounds may also be associated with wheezing. If he is breathing normally and improving without fever, please see your pediatrician for follow up.
Provide clear liquids and treat fever. Nasal saline may be used to relieve congestion.

Most : Most definitely not normal. Could be due to nightime gastric reflux causing stomach acid to go into your lungs or something more serious. I would be especially concerned if you are a smoker. You need to see a doctor and be examined, probably have a chest xray done.

Breathing : Anything from a cold with a bit of congestion to airway obstruction, also heart disease may have respiratory problems, it depends if there are other signs and symptoms such as cough or shortness of breath.   If it is a recurring problem or you have other symptoms i urge you to consult your  doc.
