i'm 36. lately stool looks different every day... no blood but some days it's smaller, shorter, thinner and other days longer or thicker. sometimes feel like anus doesn't relax/close after bm. could anxiety cause this?

: All this sounds like normal variation in colonic function and defecation. Or maybe irritable bowel syndrome. Almost certainly nothing dangerous.

: Anxiety and stress can cause     loose stools and diarrhea. Floating stools can also occur but the floating  is from a high fiber diet and gas. See your doctor for exam and treatment.

: Stool shape and color often has to do with dietary intake. Different substances in the diet will cause stool alterations-including color and shape/size. If you continue to feel like you are not emptying, you should see a GI doctor to get an evaluation to be certain this is not an issue. If it is due to constipation, after a complete evaluation, a treatment can be pursued. You may need colonoscopy.

SEE BELOW : Uncommon, what’s the blood like? Fresh red blood or dots of blood in the paper? Or dark blood? With any of these  I strongly recommend going to a gastroenterologist ASAP.

Be advised  if your having constipation because  of the amount of stress, try drinking more water and eating fiber + gastroenterologist visit.

Yes, but.....: Anxiety is a common cause of both constipation and diarrhea.  However, constipation is really not "diagnoses" unless you go days without pooping.  Many people don't have a bm every day.

See answer: altered bowel habits is a feature of IBS and relates to several factors including spasms of the bowel, altered bacterial environment, and sensitivity to certain food triggers. For many IBS patients, stress/anxiety seem to provoke the already sensitive nerves and can flare up their IBS symptoms. Possibly: Gallbladder related, particularly if sludge is not allow for appropriate drainage of bile.  But it also may be related to dietary changes.  Anxiety itself won't cause your stool color to change, it can affect your frequency! If you haven't been evaluated by your doctor and/or your OB then you need to see them sooner rather than later.

No: This is a Chinese dish served over meatballs containing onions, chili, garlic and pepper. If you made it spicy, it may have exacerbated an ulcer or hemorrhagic gastritis from another cause. If the black stools continue or you become light-headed or clearly sick, get with your physician.
