Your doctor could help with a trial of an inhaler like albuterol and you could also try medicines that are available over the counter for GERD and allergies. Nagging cough: For over a week, if otherwise healthy, not a smoker or around smokers or pets, can be your sinuses or irritated airways, at any rate, use saline wash, can use OTC cough syrup till you see your doctor, good luck

Not likely: Pet allergies can be very annoying leading to allergic rhinitis or severe triggering asthma or even rarely anaphylaxis.  However, pet allergies should not cause a person to cough up blood.  A cough productive of blood may have many causes and a physician skilled in the evaluation such as a pulmonologist can help identify the cause so proper treatment can be given. Don't delay....

No / reactive airway: A stool sample is unlikely to provide any significant information on reflux or wheezing. Reflux is a universal event, a burp is a dry reflux from the stomach while the wet ones cause most of the problems. Your windpipe has a flap designed to close & let you swallow fluids/food. When you reflux, it can get a little fluid past the flap & trigger cough, wheezing & occasionally a pneumonia.

GERD or PND: Post Nasal Drip (PND ) can cause night time cough and so does Reflux Esphagitis in  supine position. Try taking Claritin like drug at night. Do you have Pet?

i suffer from post nasal drip due to allergies which has caused a chronic cough. i recently started having breathing difficulties and started using symbicord 160 two days ago however it's making my breathing worse. can i stop using it immediately?

Asthma attack: If your asthma is worsening despite Symbicort treatment. You may need oral steroids, and an appointment with your PCP is indicated. 
In the meantime, use nasal saline spray and please avoid any triggers of your asthma such as dust or mold.

Chronic cough: Could still be a component of non-allergic rhinitis with post-nasal drainage; cough variant asthma which typically shows normal spirometry but improves with treatment. Could also be medication-induced. And even your gerd treatment might still be suboptimal.

See a doctor: the most common causes of dry cough are bronchspasm, acid reflux, and post nasal drip.
in your case poorly selective beta blockers like metoprolol and atenolol may cause bronchospasm hence the cough.

if you need a beta blocker "bystolic" would be a better choice, however a work up with lung function testing, and an exam of the posterior pharynx and vocal cords and possibly allergy testing.
