Keeping hydrated so the secretions are thin and easy to cough up is key. If the cough is due to bronchospasm, bronchodilator med is the answer. So, treating the cause of cough is needed to get rid of it!

Some of them: The best thing to do is ask your child's doctor. Many of the over-the-counter cough meds have  been shown to be ineffective in children, or cause side effects. When I do use one, I tend to use a simple antihistamine (Benadryl, Zyrtec) instead of a combination med. Honey (in warm water or tea) has also been found to be effective for cough- in children over 2 yrs old.
