Avoidance: Avoiding the foods to which you are allergic is still the best treatment. Studies are underway with oral desensitization, but this technique is not ready yet for generalized use. Sometimes a food challenge in a doctor's office can confirm if you are truly allergic to these foods. Allergy tests for foods often produce false positive reactions.

Coorn Allergy: A corn allergy is an exaggerated immune response due to exposure to corn protein. The reaction can present with typical symptoms of hives, respiratory symptoms (cough, wheeze, shortness of breath), GI symptoms (abdominal pain, vomiting), swelling, loss of consciousness, and can be fatal. Symptoms typically present within minutes to a couple hours after ingestion or contact.

Not exactly: They are both corn related and those with corn allergy may react to corn pollen with runny nose and or asthma. If the corn pollen allergy is moderate to severe,  it is best to avoid corn. www.about.com has a good article on this subject.

Accepted Answer

Pollen allergy OR: No, corn pollen is not the same as the vegetable corn. This comes up with nut trees too, like pecan pollen vs pecan nuts, walnut tree pollen vs walnuts. The allergens in the pollens are not the same as the allergens in the "fruits" the plant produces. We have different skin tests for each and can show you how your responses differ.

Go to an  allergist: Allergy to corn is no common, but can be severe.  The tests for allergy to corn are not reliable.  If an allergy specialist feels it is required the only proof of corn allergy would be in oral challenge.But this should  be performed under the guidance of an allergist trained in doing food challenges.

Sometimes: But not all the time. Nasal allergies are not a frequent cause of a really bad persistent cough. In a child with allergies and a really bad cough (assuming no fever) I would be concerned about a reactive airway/asthma type condition. If the child also had eczema I would be even more concerned.

Depends: Several factors here.  I usually never recommend it if the family is attached to the pet, but if it is causing severe symptoms, you should sequester the animal out of the bedrooms and living spaces.  Then make sure you thoroughly rid those areas of cat dander as it is a potent and tenacious allergen.

Not Exactly: What is passed genetically from parent to child is the propensity to develop atopy (such as eczema, asthma, allergic rhinitis, food allergies) but usually not sensitization to specific allergens which the parent is allergic to.  The exception, which is a controversial topic, is drug allergies, but this is usually dependent on metabolism of the drug which is inherited rather than the allergy.

Hygiene hypothesis: The immune system has two opposing arms, one makes protective antibodies against bacteria and viruses, the other makes allergic antibody. One theory is that early antibiotic use disrupts the gut flora which tips the scale away from fighting infection and more toward making allergic antibodies. Clean environments might be at fault as well, farm kids don't get allergies as much as city kids.

Sometimes: Some people's allergies get better over years, some get worse, and some are stable. Keeping allergies well-controlled not only keeps kids feeling better and sleeping better, but also doing better in school (it's hard to learn material when you feel miserable)! also, keeping allergies under control decreases the risk of ear infections and sinusitis.
