COPD: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease encompasses emphysema and chronic bronchitis.  Basically, this means that smoking or another inhalant has made distortions in the architecture of your lungs that make it harder for them to work.  Atelectasis and scarring physical changes that occur secondary to COPD.

Not cancer: Atelectasis is not cancer. It is essentially a sign that some areas of your lungs are not getting as much air due to either blockage or restriction of some reason. This can be seen with foreign objects in airways, scarring, infiltration or poor lung airway movement.

: I am not sure what your question is. By your CT results, there is no evidence of mesothelioma (a malignant disease caused by asbetos) but silicosis is a risk factor for developing COPD. I assume you have been followed by a lung specialist, i.e. pulmonologist.

Lung not expanded: Means that atelectatic lung is not fully expanded.  Atelectasis can be minor where there are linear areas not fully expanded or more severe where full lobe or segment of lobe of lung collapsed.  Don't necessarily need ct.  Often diagnosed on chest x ray.

Lung compression.: Atelectasis refers to a compression of lung tissue due to lack of proper expansion during breathing.  The term. "Bibasilar" locates this atelectasis to the bottom of the lungs.  Could happen after abdominal surgery,for example, with a reduction of diaphragmatic excursion into the abdomen with inspiration.

Trace atelectasis: "A little" (trace) atelectasis affecting both lungs is a common result of tech error. It means that the airways at the bottom of the lungs (bibasilar) were uninflated (atelectasis) at the time the scan was taken. Usually, it is due to incomplete inspiration- not having a full breath in- when the technician "hit the scan button". Occasionally, it masks bilateral pneumonia but symptoms wd be obvious

The best thing to do is see your doctor and get a pulmonary function test (PFT). This tests how good your lung function is. Based on those results, as well as your symptoms, you and your doctor can devise the best treatment plan.

COPD is not a death sentence. You can live a long, functional life with the disease. First thing to do is STOP SMOKING, if applicable.

CXR: If you have otherwise been healthy, it is difficult to have hyperinflation (increase lung volume) and atelectasis (loss of lung volume) together. in the presence of chest pain (particularly when you take a deep breath), pneumonia is more likely than atelectasis. You need to be evaluated if you continues to have symptoms
