COPD and fluid reten: You can retain fluid in relation to COPD if you developed right sided cardiac failure. If you are taking prednisone you can retain fluid also.

i recently had pneumonia. i also have congestive heart failure (diastolic) and copd. i currently am extremely short of breath. xrays show i have partially collapsed lungs due to fluid. i am taking lasix every day. how else can i reinflate my lun?

: That combination of pneumonia,CHF,COPD, bilateral pleural effusions&amp; partially collapsed lungs warrant in hospital care. It appears to me that removal of large pleural fluid by strong doses of diuretics &amp; possible tapping of the chest cavities are mandatory in your treatment. It seems that the CHF is the major factor here. Proceed to the emergency room if you can't reach your MD for instructions.

83 yrs f; stable diastolic hf; rate controlled a-fib.  meds: cardizem, coumadin, (warfarin) lasix, inderal, spiriva (mild copd).  would a cardioselective betablocker be better than inderal ?

Beta blockers elderl: Limited data on this but nebivolol might be better. Likely fewer CNS side effects.

Not entirely: COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) encompasses the diseases of emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

Auscultation: When a patient has obstructive airways disease, the expiratory phase of respiration is increased compared to inspiration. There often are additional sounds which can indicate airway obstruction. When added to other physical findings, these can suggest COPD or emphysema.

COPD Emphysema: Treatment consists of smoking cessation, bronchodilators, steroids, pulmonary rehab, oxygen therapy, management of exacerbation and surgery in selected cases.

Extend life?: There are exciting new and old treatments for copd. They do make a difference in many ways. Prolongation of life is harder to achieve but is feasible.

severe copd and emphysema.  off prednizone a week ago and been on o2 24/7. what could be the cause of o2 dropping apon getting up. never did before.

Possible O2 time: The steroids only reduce inflammation. Not improve your oxygen. So possible your lung function severe enough that you may qualify for supplemental o2. Need to have your pft done to determine if your worse or not. Oxygen will improve your survival as well.
Other causes maybe your developing an infection such as pneumonia as well. See your md and test your o2 while walking or at night sleeping.

See Below: First, if you smoke STOP NOW!  Second, make sure that you have regular pulmonary function tests so your doctor knows when and how to treat.  Third, get your alpha-1-antitrypsin level checked and if it's low get on replacement therapy.  Make sure you have a Pulmonologist working with you.

No: COPD is a big box.

It includes many diseases such as asthma, bronchitis, asthmatic bronchitis, and emphysema.
