if normal symptoms post concussion are the same as delayed subdural hematoma symptoms-how are you to know if u should go to be evaluated?

Still need an Eval: Either way an accurate diagnosis should be made as these are still different entitities with different treatments. First we have to make a Diagnosis of a hematoma and that requires neuroimaging. Depending on the symptoms one is manifesting after concussion, addiional tests, monitoring and followup are critical. This may include neuroimaging. Thus I would recommend a ER or Neurology consult  asap.

i know this is probably a silly question but i saw somewhere that a concussion could cause delayed visual processing and i was wondering if i could tell if my concussion caused that. i didnt experience any visual problems from my concussion though?

: Your comments are ambiguous, but will deal with this as follows:  A concussion is an acute event, and post-concussional symptomatology lasts about 4-6 weeks.  More persistence implicates structural brain injury.  Visual problems should be addressed by an ophthalmologist, as this could be an associated additional post-traumatic complication.

i ran into a wall in september, but recently i've been having constant throbbing headaches and confusion could this be a delayed concussion ?

Yes but eval needed: If you can link the onset of your symptoms to this injury, then you may be suffering from post-concussion syndrome. If the symptoms developed weeks to months later, then they are unlikely to be concussion-related. I recommend you seek a physician's opinion as soon as possible. The symptoms you describe are relatively nonspecific, and thus, could be the result of many different conditions.

son 16 had major concussion last may. past 5 months he's been very fatigued and unable to stay awake sleeping 13+ hrs a day. is this a delay reaction?

Accepted Answer

Usually no: "delayed reaction" to a concussion.  If he had similar symptoms at the time that resolved then think of something else.  On the other hand if the concussion was severe enough and went undiagnosed and treated effectively then this could represent the continuing effects.  See your doctor first and follow advice.

: Alteration in thinking/visual disturbance/balance problems/discomfort in the spine of your neck/generalized headache &amp; heart rhythm abnormalities within the period of the event are all factors used to label a concussion. Without basic symptoms of a concussion you would not have a brain damage label. A mild concussion might be possible but the description does not support the label.

Accepted Answer

Many types of forget: If you mean that you do not recall portions of time when the injury itself occurred - that is not unusual. If you have persistent problems with memory in general sine the injury, that is a TBI (traumatic brain injury) related memory problem. 
Amnesia is a lapse in consciousness that disallows any (or most) recall of what had happened. One might come to and not recognize where one is. Do not drive.

Yes: If one is intoxicated it will mask some of the symptoms of concussion as person may be too intoicatic to answer  and may exaggerate others like nausea,dizziness and headaches,poor balance,disorientation and mental confusion

: Significant issues related to head trauma are usually evident at the time or within hours. Lack of neurologic changes, dizziness, balance problems, etc. suggest no likely long term problems will be seen. Headaches of variable intensity can appear in the week following such an event &amp; are not by themselves, a worrisome sign.

how long without symptoms after hit the head i should wait to rule out a concussion or trauma?

: If you did not lose consciousness, loose memory before or about the event, have immediate change in balance stability at the time of or in the minutes after the trauma I doubt anyone would call this a concussion. People with random head trauma may experience headaches for a week or so after the event, but this by itself does not make it a concussion. Trauma is something you know when it happens.
