Prognosis is stage: It is stage-dependent. Once the Cancer has relapsed the prognosis is bad as the disease is typically fatal. As long as it remains stage-2, there is hope for a better prognosis as long as the disease is not visibly present. In one individual the prognosis and outcome is ultimately same although numerically speaking survival is longer as long as the Cancer has not shown up in the tests.

Pathology stage: The cell type, dna type (k-ras mutation, etc.), stage of the cancer depending on how deep it may invade, whether the cancer spread to lymph nodes or other organs;  these are some of the evaluations performed after the cancer is surgically removed. Overall health and age have some affect, but not as much.

Pathology helps determine the stage after surgical removal. Stage 1 best over 90% survival, stage 2 about 80% survival, stage 3 about 60% survival & stage 4 about 40% survival. Numbers very rough and each person responds differently.

Biopsy: Colon cancer is diagnosed by a biopsy sample during colonoscopy. Pathology helps determined the stage after surgical removal of the cancer. Ranges from best stage 1 with small early cancer, to most advanced stage 4 when cancer has spread to other organs. Sometimes a ct scan or pet scan may be used to see if the cancer has spread to other sites.

What kind of mets: it depends what kind of metastases we are talking about.
if the spread to the lymph nodes, surgery and chemotherapy, and possible radiation therapy could be very helpful.
if the spread to the liver the prognosis is less optimistic, unless the metastases are able to be resected.
other metastases are less promising in spite of chemotherapy and radiation therapy .like bone and brain.

Depends: The answer to this question is highly dependent on the stage of the colon cancer when you had the surgery. Earlier stages have a low chance of recurrence, and those that may have spread deeper or to lymph nodes have a higher chance of recurrence. Chemotherapy is combined with surgery in some cases of colon cancer.

Not good: Once a cancer had metastasized, it becomes inoperable and the only way to slow it down is with either radiation and or chemotherapy when these treatments work. Ultimately the treatment itself produces immunosuppression and makes the patient susceptible to infection which is often the actual cause of death. All these variables impact the length of survival.

Possibly: For initial treatment after surgery, you shouldn't need to get kras testing.  However, if this is metastatic or recurrent colon cancer, then it may help to determine if egfr based therapies like Cetuximab can help (they only work for kras "wild type").  Remember that if you do recur (god forbid), management may be different at that future time!  not something to worry about with your current story.
