Ulcerative colitis is an autoimmune disease definitely diagnosed by endoscopy. Major symptoms of uc are diarrhea, rectal bleeding, spasms of the gut wall, passage of mucus, and crampy abdominal pain. If you have any of those, please see a doctor.

Several: Bleeding, perforation (hole in the colon),  toxic colitis, mega colon, severe diarrhea causing dehydration, and malignancy. If the disease is greater than 10 yrs and diffuse compared to segmental, the chances of malignancy are higher. These pts require frequent colonoscopies. Its very important to follow up with your GI doctor on a regular basis.
