Routine: Means the operation will be done through the chest. Exposure of the spine requires collapsing the lung on that side. The anesthesiologist uses a special breathing tube that allows him or her to selectively ventilate one or both lungs. At the end of the operation, the lung is reinflated. A drain is often left in the chest for a day or two and then removed. This is fairly routine stuff.

Syrinx: It could suggest progression of the problem. Only way to confirm this would be a good clinical exam  and  imaging studies like mri. You should see your treating physician.

Collapse implies: One of two things. 1. Pneumothorax, where air escapes the lung, or 2. A lobe seems to "close up" from a blocked bronchus. The former can be 'watched' and the lung commonly re-expands. The latter is of concern from aspirating something like a peanut, to a benign or malignant tumor needing further definition.
