Baby monitoring: A non-stress test is a way of checking on the baby.  We listen to and record the fetal heart for 20-30 minutes.  We are looking at the baseline heart rate and how the heart rate goes up or down.  We are looking at this to see if the baby is getting enough oxygen or if there are other problems with how the baby is doing.

EKG leads: You will need to allow the technicians to apply ekg leads to your chest for the stress test. You might be able to wear a shirt or robe if  the garment will button over these leads.  Ask your doctor about this.

Exercise: A bike stress test accomplishes the same result as a treadmill exercise test. Both cause you to exercise. This increases the workload on your heart. If there are blockages that limit the flow of blood to the heart muscle then ischemia is produced. This can be detected by the recording equipment and using an echocardiogram (ultrasound) or nuclear imaging improves the tests diagnostiv accuracy.

See below: During any type of stress test, the heart rate is increased to a minimum level by exercise or medication. The goal is to see if there are any ekg changes indicating possible blockages or narrowing of the coronary arteries that may result in a heart attack in the future. Afterwards, images are taken of the heart motion to see if there is any past damage resulting in wall motion abnormalities.

Coronary reserve: As a stress test progresses, the heart beats harder and faster which requires a richer and richer circulation  provided by the coronary arteries. If need outstrips supply due to blockage, the test becomes abnormal. Thus a stress test is an indirect way to look for blockage. (a direct way is to fill the coronaries with dye and observe them directly)

Maybe not: Normally if there is no ischemia, the report will say that.  The statement no significant ischemia" may mean that there is a small area of posible ischemia - usually not threatening to you.  Ask your doc to clarify this.

StressCanElevateBP: You do have high blood pressure to start with and any kind of stress can elevate it.You need to be on meds to control your BP and avoid stress by life style changes.

Both: Your cardiologist will determine whether you  need either.  And whether you can successfully perform exercise stress test.  If not then 'chemical stress test'
