Gout rx: Colchicine is used to treat several inflammatory conditions. It is  known best as a treatment for acute gout and prophylaxis for gout attacks. It is also used to treat less common conditions such as familial mediterranean fever, skin vasculitis, and chronic pericarditis.

Yes......: However there are other medicines that may be better.  Treatment of an acute gouty flare is different that that for prevention of these.  See your primary care doctor to see what medicine or combinations of medicine is best for you.

Not perfectly safe: Colchicine is a class c medication in pregnancy, meaning there are not human trials and that animal trials were either not done or showed harm. Risks and benefits of taking medications during pregnancy must be weighed with regards to the consequences of not taking the medications as both have risks. Discuss with your prescribing doctor and ob.

Rarely: They don't interact, but both can cause similar side effects.  Dose of Colchicine must be kept low and adjusted for other medications.

Unknown: Its not proven that Colchicine itself cause male infertility. Some men on Colchicine may have difficulty getting their partners pregnant but that may be related to the disease they are being treated for not the medicine itself. Majority of men on col. Have normal fertility. There is no specific duration that you have to wait. I would arbitrarily recommend 3 months for new sperm to develop.

No: if it was being used to control gout symptoms or an an anti-inflammatory, the underlying inflammation may increase after stopping it, but there is no dependency or withdrawal syndrome from colchicine.  If you have hereditary periodic fever with abdominal pain, and it was being treated with colchicine, this would also return after stopping it.

Colchicine: Colchicine (C) reduces uric acid levels in patients who do not excrete a normal amount in their urine, under-excretrs. C increases the urinary output of uric acid (U), lowering U levels in those persons. If one is an over-producer or normal producer of U, C will be of no use. You can reduce U by staying well hydrated and by avoid eating organ meats, such as liver.

: NSAIDS, such as Ibuprofen or Naproxen are also commonly used along with Colchicine during gout attacks. However due to their side effect profile, they will need to be ok’d by one of your current treating physicians based on your medical history and current meds.
