Inconclusive: There have been a great number of studies done on age-associated cognitive impairment and the potential of antioxidants to prevent memory impairments or alzheimer's disease. The findings so far have been inconclusive or contradictory. For the time being, it's sensible to strengthen positive health behaviors and to decrease behavioral health risk factors that may also influence cognitive decline.

Accepted Answer

No: Gabapentin is an analog of GHB (gamma hydroxy butyric acid).  Ghb was demonized as "the date rape drug, " but was in reality the safest, most non-toxic, non-habit forming sleep- inducing substance known.  Gabapentin shares many of the effects of ghb, but is less potent.  Reduce your dosage during the day, to a dose that does not "slow your mind."  take higher, sleep-inducing doses at night.

just dx with a benign pericallossal lipoma. will it grow? can it be cause of cognitive decline, migraines, facial pain, vision decline?what to ask dr?

Accepted Answer

Get a second opinion: Lipomas, although benign, tend to grow.  If yours is "peri-callosal' and you have the symptoms as described, the two are likely related and deserve at least follow-up. possibly treatment.  If the first neurologist (I hope that the diagnosing doctor is a specialist), has not recommended treatment, see another.  If he has and you trust him/her, you have a choice to make.

Yes: There are several drugs on the market which show measurable effects on the slowing of cognitive decline with alzheimer's. These are the cholinesterase inhibitors (aricept, exelon, (rivastigmine) razadyne) and they are used in combination with namenda. They are not fda approved for age-related cognitive impairment, but help increase the activity of acetylcholine, which may be deficient in some patients with arci.

for the past few years i've noticed cognitive decline. i don't feel as smart. does pot improve bipolar cognition. study after study on the net say yes?

Beware the blogs: Marijuana is of some limited value for spasticity in MS, and maybe some forms of epilepsy, and migraine, but can cause distinct worsening of many cognitive and behavioral conditions.  I would be very skeptical of the motley opinions voiced online, as there are few if any reliable studies so far.  Find out etiology of cognitive issues.

does zopiclone cause cognitive decline or any brain damage?

Accepted Answer

: Zopiclone is not approved in the USA.  It is considered as, or more addictive, than benzodiazepines, yet is a mediocre sleeping pill.  Thus, can cause temporary cognitive clouding, "brain fog", lower focus and concentration ability, dizziness and imbalance.  Not clear to me if sleep walking can occur.  Doubt would cause "brain damage" or dementia when discontinued, but would expect withdrawal sxs.

how best to avoid cognitive decline when in need of general anesthesia. is tiva better than inhalation anesthetics? is straight propofol better? i am 69 and veryyyyy concerned?

: General anesthesia does not promote cognitive decline. Don't worry about it. But discuss with your anesthesiologist if you remain concerned.

in 80 yr old seniors  when taking the cognitive decline test from mental health services (for signs of dementia), if the patient already has dyslexia would this interfere with the result in causing a false test result in the diagnosing of dementia ?

Accepted Answer

: Dyslexia might make it difficult for a cognitively impaired senior to accurately complete the testing, but these are screening studies and not as comprehensive or as accurate as a full scale neuropsychological test battery.  Nonetheless, such tests do provide a pathway to further evaluations.  MRI imaging can be very objectifying, and an EEG would likewise help.  A neurologist may be very useful.

mild frontal lobe predominant cortical involution what does this mri result mean? possible diagnosises? i have developed speech issues, i've have cognitive decline loss of short term memory and long term is dipping down. my iq fell lower?

: Any kind of "cortical involution" (i.e., decrease in normal mass) can affect cerebral function.  See a neurologist for guidance.

i'm having a brain mri on wed. i've been having many issues with cognitive decline, fatigue, left side weakness, paralyzed toes (left), gastro, lots more due to long haulers. can i expect anything to show on mri if i've been getting better?

: Sounds like the nervous system is quite involved. Best to calm it with Vitamin B Complexes, especially -B12,B6, B2 &amp; Folic Acid (B9) - Vitamin C,D,E , Zinc &amp; Gingko.  Avoid inflammatory foods/drinks with high sugars and artificial sugars. Most importantly stay away from cold/ices foods &amp; drinks and see the PCP for Antiviral also.
