Same diff: Same class (iii) and are equianalgesic (eg 1 5/325 vicodin = 1 t#3).  Vicodin has hydrocodone, man made Codeine good for people who can't tolerate codeine.  Sad thing? Usa = 2% of worlds population, uses 98% of the worlds vicodin prescriptions.   Be careful about using short-acting narcotics for non-malignant pain.  It's generally a bad long-term answer.

i had a fairly severe allergic reaction to morphine. i am also allergic to vicodin, codeine, and nsaids. is tramadol/ultram safe? i have read conflicting things.

Safe pain killer: Unfortunately there is no such thing as a "safe pain killer" . What are you taking these meds for? Look for alternative treatment options rather than relying on a pill to help you. Based on your age, look at 5 yrs from now and think about where you want to be? Most opiates are habit forming and tolerance develops over time making them ineffective.

Likely: The reaction from codeine, Vicodin, Morphine etc are not truly allergic reaction but from these drugs' ability to release histamine from your cells. Thus you will not likely tolerate any drug in the opiate group. NSAIDs can also cause hives (which are considered allergic in some) but more likely aggravates an existing episode of hives regardless what may be causing it. Need more information.

However, in general, codeine is the least potent of all the opioids, with 60 mg being the equivalent of 5 mg of oxycodone and probably 7.5 mg of hydrocodone ON AVERAGE.  This is if taken by mouth. IM codeine is more potent - about twice.

Non- narcotic amount: I think  the difference is in the amount of Acetaminophen in this combined preparation. The amount of narcotic painkiller ( hydrocodone) is most likely the same, 7.5 mg.

Tylenol (acetaminophen): Arthritis strength tylenol (acetaminophen) is helpful.  Vicodin (hydrocodone) is a narcotic and the chronic use of narcotics for pain control can cause serious side effects, including narcotic dependence, narcotic tolerance, and hyperalgesia (hyspersensitivity to pain).  This class of drugs should not be used to treat arthritis pain unless no other options are effective.

Codeine: Codeine, at the proper dosage, can relieve pain and suppress cough. However, it can also cause a child to stop breathing when used during the post-operative period (after surgery). Frequent usage can cause addiction.
