Accepted Answer

No: If they truly had anaphylaxis to codeine, almost any other opiate will do the same thing, because they are all chemically closely related and are metabolized to Codeine and morphine, which is actually the active product that reduces pain.  There are non-opiate medications (opioids) like meperidine, fentanyl, Methadone and others that are different and should not cause reactions.

Inflammatory respons: Allergies involve antibodies and other chemicals such as histamine that are produced in response to a substance which cause acute inflammation. Signs include runny nose, watery eyes, itching, rash (hives), nausea and dizziness. In more serious cases, swelling of the face and tongue can develop as well as anaphylactic shock which requires urgent medical intervention.

Opiate allergy: True allergies to opiates are very rare.  Usually we're talking about side effects including nausea, vomiting, constipation and other side effects.   and allergic response is a particular diagnosis based on activation of the allergic system which would show up as rashes, swelling, difficulty breathing and other symptoms.

There are many rules: and they are all inaccurate, because the individual differences in how these drugs are metabolized are so great that odds are good any table is going to be wrong. However, in general, codeine is the least potent of all the opioids, with 60 mg being the equivalent of 5 mg of oxycodone and probably 7.5 mg of hydrocodone ON AVERAGE.  This is if taken by mouth. IM codeine is more potent - about twice.

Maybe...: This generally depends on what kind of reaction you had to codeine.  I don't usually recommend you take hydrocodone if you had a severe allergic reaction (i.e., hives, swelling, difficulty breathing, etc.).  One thing about codeine, however, is that it can cause itching as a side effect, and this isn't necessarily an allergy.  If that's all that happened, you may be able to try it. Talk to your dr.

Yes,: they are all very addictive narcotics, best to avoid if possible, or short term usage, they can all cause death if overdosed.

hydrocodone is derivative of codeine-.

Homatropine is a cycloplegic.
Promethazine is a phenothiazine.

Similar: They are very similar but not exactly the same.  Most would consider hydrocodone to be a stronger pain medicine.

Yes!!!: Both hydrocodone & Codeine are considered narcotics or opioids, and as such are controlled substances. They are typically used for pain control and cough suppression. But they are definitely different drugs. The dea lists hydrocodone as a a schedule iii drug while Codeine is a schedule iv. For comparison, morphine & oxycodone are schedule ii (we can't prescribe schedule i). All are addicting drugs.
