what would you recommend for upper respiratory tract infection. over the last few years this is my achilles heel! 
am on chronic meds for asthma?

Good news/bad news: Good news: most URI's start out as viral infections; however about 20-30% are bacterial or mixed. Bad news: no real prophylaxis; however you can follow these hints: Force fluids x 8-10 glasses/day of electrolyte rich fluids (Powerade, Gatorade, Vitamin Water, G) and 4-6 bowls/day of broth, bullion, consume or soup. Hot steam showers 3-4 times/day. Nasal saline, Tylenol as needed, Robitussin DM .

what is the best nasal medication for chronic cough? i am getting over an upper respiratory infection, i have little to no sputum and am not a smoker.

Nasal medication?: I am not aware of any nasal sprays specifically for cough. Coughs can occur because of "post-nasal drip" which is usually from sinus infection. These coughs may be relatively dry. You are already on an antihistamine and a nasal steroid.  Nasal decongestants are habit forming and actually may worsen the problem. If cough is nonproductive and keeping you up at night, dextromethorphan/codeine helps.

i was sent to the er and diagnosed with ileitis. how common is bacterial or viral ileitis compared to a chronic condition? i've also been fighting an upper respiratory infection for a couple weeks and wonder if it is possible for that infection to travel

Neither,need tests: One visit to ER is not enough to diagnose  ' ileitis ' . See you family doctor or gastroenterologist for further investigation , to make sure you do not have Crohn's disease, yes infection like TB,viral &amp; fungal  possible  Your URI may not be related.

i developed a chronic cough for many months following an unknown upper respiratory infection, and the chest ct (no contrast) showed mild coarse interstitial lung markings at the lung apices consistent with mild areas of scarring. what does this mean?

: How does a CT or any test apply to me? To answer that it should be understood that tests results are taken into account with the things the patients, says, the examination, lab tests, and all other diagnostic tests.  Ask your doctor who was able to examine you about your condition. These CT findings are not specific to a  particular condition but may be connected to your cough

Chronic : Inflammation, defects or problems clearing secretions, recurrent or constant exposure to environmental irritants or infectious agents, among other things.

Accepted Answer

Depends: Depends on what it is.  If it is a bacterial infection, such as strep pharyngitis, you may need antibiotics (though not all pharyngitis will).  If it is a viral infection, it is just supportive care.

"Colds": Viruses (e.g. Rhinovirus, respiratory syscitial virus, adenovirus, para-influenza and influenza viruses, etc., ) are the most common.   These account for the vast majority of uppoer respiratory illnesses.

Depends: Your recurrent upper respiratory infections could be related to recurrent/chronic sinusitis or allergies.
