Mostly just time: For most muscular symptom presentations in the neck, it takes a little time to  clear.  Sometimes, this may be an initial symptom of another problem like a disc herniation but those usually resolve with time.  If you smoke, stop.  Local heat application may help as can simple stretching of the neck while showering and avoiding prolonged positioning.  Otc medication may help if no contraindications.

Nerve or muscle: This could be due to a nerve entrapment or inflamed muscle. If the pain is worse on turning your head toward the pain, a pinched nerve is likely; if worse turning away from the pain it is probably muscular. Try rest, intermittent moist heat, an antiinflammatory medication(like Ibuprofen if you can take them) and using a neck brace. It may take 5 to 10 days to resolve.

Multiple Things: Many sources can result in referred pain to the shoulder blade.  Along with the neurogenic sources like cervical (c6 for example) and the suprascapular nerve, we also see many patients with occult shoulder pathology have referred pain to this area. Yes: Irritation to the neck and scalp muscles can give you headaches and dizziness. If your neck pain resolves after heavy muscle use but your other symptoms remain for more that a few days without improving i would suggest following with your doctor.

i get a stiff neck/shoulder about once a month. the pain decreases  lasts a week.changing pillows has not helped. what other reasons can cause this?

Neuritis: sometimes there can be nerve irritation in the spine, in this case the cervical region. may want to see your doctor and have x-ray/MRI to see if there is possible disc/pressure on nerves coming out from that part of your spine.Also could be due to tension /stress that will give upper back/ neck spasms

Possible nerve pain: This syndrome may be due to inflammation of the muscles of the neck and shoulder or may be due to nerve impingement from vertebral or disc problems in the neck.  Try warm and cold applications,wearing a soft cervical collar and,if you can take them,NSAIDS like ibuprofen. If symptoms persist or worsen, an orthopedic surgeon is qualified to evaluate and advise you.

Neck pain: At your age, a stiff neck is most commonly due to degenerative changes, meaning aging changes.  For now, your symptoms should be well treatable with simple conservative measures such as stretching, range of motion exercises, and anti-inflammatory meds (such as ibuprofen, naproxyn).  See an md if symptoms persist.

Muscle Spasm: What you have described is a pressure point .  You have pressed on a cervical nerve root, most likely c-5 dermatomal distribution.

Flexeril (cyclobenzaprine hcl) not common: Muscle relaxants such as cyclobenzaprine/"flexeril" are not commonly prescribed for your symptoms. Nsaids are more commonly utilized.
