what can i do about chronic nasal congestion?

Get evaluated: Significant seasonal/perenial rhinitis can adversely affect quality of life, especially sleep which in turn can affect work performance and life-functions in general. Basic care such as nasal rinse/cleansing to reduce allergen build-up, good air/furnace filters, minimize pet danders. Nasal steroids are best, but you may need more than spray--antihistamine/decongestant. Consult doc. Good luck.

Multiple Causes: Nasal congestion can be from many different causes - including structural problems ( deviated septum), nasal polyps, allergies, thyroid diseases. Evaluation may include getting a ct scan of one's nose and sinuses, allergy testing and blood work.

what exactly does an antihistamine do to the body? i have chronic nasal congestion, will it improve that or worsen it?

Decrease inflammatio: Antihistamines may decrease the inflammation caused by allergies causing your nasal congestion. It can't make it worse. It should improve it, if allergy is the cause. Try to figure out what the allergic cause is, if it is something like dust, a hepaair  filter might help and you might need to rely on antihistamines. The causes are many including mold, dust, pollen, etc.

i have chronic nasal congestion,most bothersome at night.actifed has given me the best relief over the years, through it's various phases,otc,and up till now behind the counter requiring i.d. walgreen has had it up till now.where can i get it now?

: The pharmacist is your best source. They can tell if there are supply issues etc. also they can recommend another brand for the same medication or any type of substitute

Nasal congestion: Yes this is possible.  You should see a doctor for an examination and proper treatment.

ive chronic nasal congestion. my ent couldnt figure out the problem. the only thing that work is nasal decongestants, but can i use them everyday?

Accepted Answer

Decongestants: Depending the type you are taking and your medical history decongestants can be taken safely.  They can be taken everyday as long as you follow the recommended dosages and frequencies.  If you have hypertension or cardiovascular disease, you should not take decongestants oral ones.  Topical sprays should only be used for colds or sinus infections for 2-4 days then stopped.

Lots of Options: OTC non-sedating antihistamines like Allegra, Claritin, (loratadine) or Zyrtec are helpful for perennial allergic rhinitis symptoms, however the gold-standard treatment are daily intranasal steroid sprays if your symptoms are more severe. Avoidance of triggers is important as well and allergy shots are also an option. Saline sprays are useful but will not provide lasting relief used alone. See Allergist.

Lung Question: Sinusitis, allergies and reflux are the primary cause of lung disease. A combination treatment plan can maximize your result. An allergist, ent, pulmonologist and a GI may be needed.

See a doctor: This needs medical attention. Most likely allergic sinusitis, but could be an infection that needs an antibiotic. Nasal or sinus cancer is far less likely, but you shouldn't take the chance. Frequently using Afrin and related sprays makes them work less well, don't last as long, leading to more frequent and  unnecssary dosing. You might be allergic to it; try saline spray instead. is sleep apnea caused by not getting enough oxygen through my nose or is the problem sourced in my neck? i have chronic nasal congestion.

Not your nose: People with complete nasal blockade will simply begin to breathe through their mouth while asleep. This is not sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is closure of the airway due to obstruction of tissue in the back of the  throat (posterior pharynx) and it requires surgery or continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) to open it.
