ate 900ml of dark chocolate ice cream during the evening. next day, stool was very, very dark. almost black. would this cause this or melena? nervous.

Not melena: Hi
I wouldn't worry too much about it. Melena is a recurring issue and due to small amounts of bleeding in the GI tract, not just a one time deal. It is caused by the oxidation of the iron (which is present in our blood cells) by our digestive enzymes. Sometimes there is food coloring in ice cream, which can definitely color your stool. Just keep an eye on it for now.

Not likely: The color of the stools can certainly be affected by the type of food that we eat, but usually not black unless you eat raw red meat or other dish containing animal blood.  If you are really having jet black and tarry stools, then it may suggest bleeding inside the stomach or small bowels. You need to see your doctor right away for urgent evaluation.

i have had runny stools for 4 days with lack of appetite. i ate a taco and chocolate ice cream yesterday and today i have the runny stool but it is black now. is this something to worry about?

Need evaluation: Runny stools for 4 days that are now black in color can be a sign of bleeding in the stomach, specially since associated with lack of appetite. Should see a doctor soon and get it looked at. Can get your vitals done to check bp and pulse and labs for anemia and explore the cause of a possible bleed. Avoid over the counter pain meds, alcohol and spicy foods for now.

Is this new?: There could be many reasons why this is happening, and it could be just normal stools for you. An imbalance in one's gut bacteria can cause a change in consistency of the stool. It could also be mild inflammation in the gut, or allergy...? A good exam and history can help sort this out.

Black stools spinach: Most likely due to spinach. Hemorrhoids do not cause black stools. But easy to test for blood by taking sample to your Dr. Tell your team.

Depends on the cause: If black stools are due to bleeding from the stomach it may take few days with the treatment of underluing cause like gastric erosions, ulcers etc.If they are not due to bleeding and from eating certain foods, meds and taking iron than it will clear if you stop the iron or the foods which are causing it.

See your doc: Black stools can be from gastrointestinal bleeding (usually upper GI source), iron pills, peptobismol, charcoal capsules, arsenic. Dark stools can also come from blueberries, etc. See your doc.  See if stool tests + for blood.  If so get evaluated-generally upper endoscopy, maybe colonoscopy (black stool can be from right side of colon), or capsule endoscopy to check small bowel.

Melena ?: Dark-colored stools may result from iron supplements, foods you eat (like a lot of spinach), substances (like peptobismol), but most significantly suggests bleeding. When blood is denatured by acid in your stomach, as from ulcers, stools will turn tarry ("melena"). Blood may also be ingested from nose bleeds, bleeding gums... Persistent melena (without obvious cause) & symptoms warrants md visit.
