is thorazine (chlorpromazine) a safe sleep aid. i have always had insomnia and i hate those z-drugs. worried about tardive dyskinesia. i take a small dose at bedtime.

Check with your doc: I guess since you're taking thorazine, (chlorpromazine) you must be getting it from a doc.  Why not ask them if you can either have a good evaluation for what you suffer from insomnia or if more specific sleep medications wouldn't be better for you.  Any of the "z" drugs as you say have the real risk of causing tardive dyskinesias.  Thorazine (chlorpromazine) as a sleep aid is somewhat passe in my opinion.

why does it take me so long to fall asleep even after taking 200 mg of thorazine (chlorpromazine)? sometimes i don't even fall asleep after taking the thorazine (chlorpromazine).

Well: This is a difficult question to answer as there are many different reasons people have difficulty sleeping including anxiety, depression, poor sleep environment, poor sleep hygiene, stimulates (such as caffeine), medications, mania, and other. If your current medication is not working, contact your doctor and discuss other options.

Chlorpromazine: Chlorpromazine is an antipsychotic medicine, and is very sedating.  It is safe when prescribed appropriately.  If this is not your medication, though, please do not "just try it once to see how it works.".

Largactil= Chlorprom: I don't know what it is being prescribed for or what dose is being used. I can't think of many situations that would call for this medication.

Safe or efficacious?: Sleep hygiene is the most essential element to sound, restful sleep. For short-term use, 25mg of Chlorpromazine is a small dose--that's probably less dangerous. Clonazepam 1mg is more likely to help with fragmented sleep, but just 1 month seems a short trial. Either way, good luck!

Symptom exacerbation: Discontinuation protocol must address major risk of discontinuation.  In the case of thorazine (chlorpromazine) and other antipsychotic medications, the big risk is return of psychotic symptoms (voices, paranoia, other delusions).  Since these symptoms, almost by definition, is difficult for the sufferer to detect by him/herself, a person who can monitor for return of symptoms is needed: ideally, a psychiatrist.
