: Vitamin C &amp; D are often added or already present in food in our regular diet (i.e. cereal, milk, orange juice). The Vitamin D recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for children 4-8 years old is 600 IU/day (15µg). The upper limit is 3000 IU/day. For Vitamin C the RDA is 25 mg/day, the upper limit is 650 mg/day.

my vitamin d level is 19ng/ml the lab reference is 30-100. nih website says 20ng/ml is adequate, and above 50 has adverse effects, but md says above 30 is optimal. do i need to supplement and how much? md advised 5000 iu/day, i think it's excessive?

: Levels of 50 nmol/L (20 ng/mL) or above are adequate for bone and overall health. Levels below 30 nmol/L (12 ng/mL) are too low &amp; might weaken your bones &amp; affect your health. Levels above 125 nmol/L (50 ng/mL) are too high and can cause health problems.For you, the 19 is too low and should be increased and initially increasing with 5000 IU per day for about a month, then 1000 IU per day usually.

Side Effects: Side effects of taking a multivitamin include an upset stomach, headache or
unpleasant taste in your mouth. If you take it right before bedtime, it could cause some sleep problems. Most people do not notice any difficulties when taking vitamins.  If you take too many, one can have more serious side effects. Take the vitamin as directed on the bottle.

Vitamin a: Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) levels for adults have been established for vitamin a: men 14 years and older, 900 mcg/day (3000 IU); women 14 years and older, 700 mcg/day (2300 IU) but depending on whether someone consume it to prevent mortality during pregnancy or having an eye disease it can be used a higher dose,  it's preferred to consume vitamins through food though.

By eating well: Eat a varied, balanced diet that contains whole grains, lots of fruits, lots of vegetables, and lean meats (including fish). If you eat well, most of your vitamin needs will be met by your food. The exception to this is vitamin d. D is hard to get in sufficient quantity from food, so it's best to take a daily supplement.
