is waking up with sudden chest congestion asthma  symptom? it went away and haven't felt it since yesterday morning when it suddenly happened.

Probably not: If an isolated event, probably more indicative of viral infection.  Recurrent and intermittent chest tightness, wheezing, or shortness of breath or more typical descriptions and do occur frequently at night.

Viral infection: By far the most common cause of chest congestion and phlegm of any color (other than blood) is viral upper respiratory tract infection.  No treatment other than conservative measures is necessary.  Serious signs such as chest pain, shortness of breath, blood in the sputum, wheezing and other abnormal breath sounds need further investigation by your doctor.

i have chest congestion after lying down. sometimes when i wake in the morning i cough up lots of mucus. no other respiratory symptoms. causes?

Cough: You perceive it in the chest but it really is that you have mucus from your nose which at night drops to the back of yr throat (gravity) where u have cough receptors that make you cough. You should treat your allergies (plenty of OTC meds), get a good HEPA filter for home use and speak to yr doc to get benzonatate 200mg q8h for a few days.

i was at a conference 14 days ago in cape town  with guest from africa and america and now i am presenting flu like symptoms , chest pain and fatigue, headache but not coughing and fever  just chest congestion. should i be worried ?

: A COVID 19 test is recommended. Consider flu testing if you have a fever. You may have a common cold, but the chest pain should be evaluated by your physician. Muscle aches may be associated with influenza and COVID-19. A heating pad,fluids as well as close monitoring of your breathing and temperature are recommended.

hi i am having nasal congestion and some chest congestion. runny nose and sneeze in the morning and cough a little but getting a little better a lot of clear mucus from nose and sometimes yellow just wondering if i need an antibiotic or not?

: Almost certainly a virus so antibiotics will nor help. Could be flu if you did not get shot and you need to be tested to see if antivirals might help.  Discuss with your local Dr as they know know you.  I do not.

i have had chest congestion for close to a week.  my symptoms have gotten significantly better; however i am still coughing up deep brown / slightly red tint to the brown phlegm, specifically in mornings and evenings.  i also have an odd "metallic" taste

Do not ignore: Discolored mucous may be blood.  Metallic taste may be blood.  Seek care ASAP.

Allergy:  The problem is we are treating life time problem like allergy as a temporary cold,you need to stay on Zyrtec D or Claritin D for two weeks then to the plain one daily. For up to three month or it could be up to a year or a life time. You need to eat a full table spoon of your own local honey daily to three times a day, you need a hot green tea with lemon and honey nightly with Benadryl (diphenhydramine) 25-50mg

Dry mouth/congestion: Best to get eval by Dr., as it sounds like your nasal mucus and congestion is causing you to breath through your mouth while sleeping, thus causing your dry mouth in the morning.  A RX corticosteroid nasal spray can help open up your nasal passages and improve your congestion and mucus issues, etc.  See the Doctor, best wishes.

Do you smoke?: Smoking does that. Certain types of bacteria also cause pneumonia without symptoms of runny nose or high fevers.
