i get up 2 to 3 times woken up with horrible charlie horse in my calf. my calf & lower leg is so hard & painful. what can i do or take so i can get good night sleep?

: Not clear, based upon your  post, that you have confirmed musculoskeletal causes, and I would be concerned about a potential  thrombophlebitis in your leg.  Suggest a visit to an ER or urgent care center and, at the  least, a non-invasive ultrasound study to assess potential blood clot.  This could evolve into an embolism, so, do NOT  delay your assessment.

i have had charlie horse-like pains in my right knee that radiates down the leg. it always seems to happen when i lie down to go to sleep. any advice?

Is your knee otherwise fine?  Sometimes inflammation inside the knee can be triggered by changes in position when lying down, and start hurting. Any 'radiating' pain also suggests nerve compression as a source. Try more stretching, but if continues, consult with your PCP. Good luck.

Unknown cause: Charlie horse leg pain is common and the cause is unknown.  If you have these frequently you can lower the incidence by using quinine infused seltzer water in the late evening.

Be seen: If it is red and swollen, I sure would have her seen.  Without history of injury, two most common causes are cellulitis, which is an infection of the soft tissue; or an inflammatory condition such as gout.  Take her to be seen.

Hmm: Do these spontaneously occur or from trauma?  If you are having sudden tightness, redness, or pain from your calf or behind the knee, you may want to get checked for a blood clot.  If it's from trauma or exercise, hydration and stretching with ice and possible antiinflammatory medication will help.

No: You can take maximum 800 mg at a time.  You can take ibuprofen every 6-8 hrs.  Max daily dose shold be about 2,400.  May cause stomach irritation, bleeding

Get to the ER: You don't say why you are on prednisone.  You could have a new compression fracture in your spine.   Your electrolytes could be off. Not being able to stand up is a bit of a deal breaker and makes this an emergency.
